Apalachee boys
eliminated from
playoff contention
after losses to
Dacula, Lanier

Needing a win to keep its fading postseason
hopes alive, the Apalachee High School boys soc
cer team battled visiting Dacula High School to
overtime Friday night but ended up on the short
end of a 2-1 score.
The Wildcats were officially eliminated from
playoff contention Tuesday with a 2-0 loss at
Lanier.
While disappointed in the outcome of Friday’s
match, Wildcats coach Chad Hooper liked the
way his team competed.
“We had several chances and we could have
easily pulled away and won this match,” Hooper
said. “We didn’t take advantage of those chances
and it cost us.
Hooper said in the first meeting between the
schools earlier this month, Apalachee (5-8, 1-7
in GHSA Region 8-AAAAAA) trailed 4-0 at
halftime.
“It was much different this time,” the coach
said. “We just have to cash in when we have
chances. When you are playing a team like this
you have to take advantage of those chances.”
The Falcons made the lone goal of overtime
with less than a minute to play in the first
five-minute period.
Dacula led 1-0 at halftime Friday. After several
misfires in the first 13 minutes of the second half
by Apalachee, Chris Godinez evened the score at
the 26:54 mark.
Alejandro Mina had previously just missed on
a goal opportunity with 33 minutes remaining in
the match for the Wildcats.
Dacula put the first goal on the board with
32:34 left in the first half. It was the lone goal of
regulation for the Falcons.
The Falcons won the March 6 matchup against
Apalachee 6-4.
The Wildcats will host Habersham Central on
Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for an 8-AAAAAA match
and then are off until April 10 when they host
Madison County in a non-region match.
WBHS teams swept
at Habersham, playoff
hopes in jeopardy
The Winder-Barrow girls and boys soccer teams’
playoff hopes are hanging by a thread after both
teams lost GHSA Region 8-AAAAAA matches at
Habersham Central on Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldoggs lost 3-1 to the Lady Raid
ers, who avenged a 4-3 loss at Winder-Barrow on
March 9. The Lady Bulldoggs are now 4-9 overall
and 1-7 in region play, two games back of Gaines
ville with two region matches left to play.
They will need to win those final two contests
— at Gainesville on Thursday and at home over
rival Apalachee on April 13 — and get some help
to qualify for the tournament.
The Winder-Barrow boys are in the same boat,
following a 2-1 loss at Habersham on Tuesday.
The Bulldoggs had beaten the Raiders in penalty
kicks March 9, but now find themselves 2-6 in
region play (5-7-1 overall) and two games behind
fourth-place Lanier with two matches left.
The Lady Bulldoggs’ match at Gainesville
begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by the
boys at 7:30 p.m.

The Apalachee boys tennis team picked up a 4-1
win at Habersham Central on Tuesday in a GHSA
Region 8-AAAAAA contest.
The Wildcats (8-6, 2-3 region) were led by Eli
Hagan, who won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Davis
Hayes and Pierson Hill won their No. 1 doubles
match (7-5, 6-2), No. 3 singles player Parker King
clinched the match with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory.
Luke Woschitz and Jeremiah Chance won No. 2
doubles (7-6, 6-2) after falling behind 0-5 in the
first set.
Apalachee was set to return to action Wednes
day afternoon at home against Cedar Shoals and is
then off until the region tournament April 10-11 at

Lady Wildcats fall in penalty kicks to Dacula,
lose at Lanier, drop to third in region standings
By Chris Bridges

In a marquee GHSA
Region 8-AAAAAA
matchup Friday after
noon, the Apalachee High
School Lady Wildcats soc
cer team fell in yet anoth
er close matchup against
Dacula High School.
Ninety minutes were not
enough to decide the con
test as neither Apalachee
nor Dacula could manage
a goal in regulation or
two five-minute overtime
periods. The Lady Falcons
took the 1-0 victory on
penalty kicks.
The loss was disap
pointing for Lady Wildcat
players but coach Scott
Bates tried to remind them
there was still plenty to
play for this season.
“We can be disap
pointed in the outcome
but not with the effort,”
Bates said. “Dacula has
some very good players.
However, we also have
some very good players
as well.”
“I hate penalty kicks.”
Bates said of the way
Friday night’s match was
determined. “When you
get to that point anything
can happen and it’s not
really a good way to deter
mine a winner. At times
we were the better team
and at times they were. It
was a tough one for us to
lose.”
The win by the Lady
Falcons (10-2 overall, 7-1
in region) gave them the
inside track at this point
to the No. 1 seed in the
region. Apalachee (8-3-1,
5-3 following a 2-1 loss
at Lanier on Tuesday)
are sitting in third place.
The Lady Wildcats would
likely need to win their
final two region contests
against Habersham Cen
tral and Winder-Barrow
and get some help from
Dacula and Gainesville
against Lanier. The Lady
Longhorns could take
over first place with a win
against Dacula on Thurs
day.
In many ways, Friday’s
match against Dacula was
similar to the March 6
contest in which Dacula
also took a 1-0 win.
Senior goal keeper
Emily Brooks once again
made several big defen
sive plays for the Lady
Wildcats throughout the
contest and continued her
standout season.
Bonilla made the first
attempt on goal at the
38:30 mark the first half.
Erin Allen just missed an
attempt with 24:20 left in
the first half.
Dacula’s first legitimate
scoring threat came with
26 minutes remaining in

the first half but Brooks
made a save at the 25:10
mark.
Both teams played
strong defense in the first
40 minutes echoing the
first matchup between the
teams earlier in the month.
The Lady Falcons made
their first penalty kick
while Apalachee misfired.
The Lady Wildcats stayed
alive after successful
kicks from Macky Clark
and Erin Allen but a mis
fire on their fourth attempt
gave Dacula the win.
Apalachee and Dacula
continued their series of
close contests. The team
also had a 1-0 contest
decided on penalty kicks
in 2017.
The Lady Wildcats will
host Habersham Central at
5:30 p.m. Thursday at R.
Harold Harrison Stadium.
