Coffee is a drink made from the beans of the coffee plant and is served in a variety of ways all over
the World. It is one of the most popular drinks on Earth. Americans consume almost one third of all the
coffee produced in the World each year. Coffee shops are found in abundance. The drink can be served
hot, cold, with milk, cream, sugar, plain, or on ice. There are many different variations of how the drink
can be served. Brazil is the World’s largest producer of coffee beans. No other Country comes close
to making as much coffee as this South American Country. Although Brazil is the number one exporter
of Coffee, the coffee plant actually originated in Ethiopia. The plant then spread to Arabia where it was
heavily produced until the 1700’s. There are different types of coffee plants, named for where they came
from. The most widely used is the Arabica bean which gets its name from Arabia. The plants grown in
Brazil come from Arabia.
In order to make coffee, the beans must go through a certain process. The fruit of a coffee plant is
known as a cherry. When the cherries are ripe, they are picked and dried out. After they are dry, the
beans inside the cherry are harvested. They then go through the process of being dried out and roasted.
After the beans are roasted, they are ground up. Hot water is then added to the grinds and brewed (or
heated up) to create the clear, brown liquid known as coffee.
