“Sam” Akins,
87, entered into

Mr. Akins
was born in
Cumming, Ga.,
the son of the
late Frank
lin and Clara
Akins. He was
a United States
Navy Veteran of
the Korean War,
was retired from General Electric,
and was a member of Calvary Bap
tist Church. Mr. Akins was preceded
in death by two sisters, Sleety Mae
Akins and Frances Dishroom. Since
his retirement, Mr. Akins enjoyed
working outdoors on his farm, gar
dening, and looking after his chick
ens and cattle.
Survivors include his wife, Faye
Hollingshed Akins, Jefferson; two
daughters, Lisa Akins Kelly and her
husband Terry, Auburn, and Sandra
Akins (Jeremy Shaffner), Braselton;
three grandchildren, Maegan Eliza
beth DeYoung, Marissa Nicole De
Young, and Joseph Raymond De
Young; one step-grandchild, Robert
Kelly; and one great-grandchild,
Harper Jean DeYoung.
Funeral services were held Tues
day, May 1, from the Chapel of
Evans Funeral Home with Dr. Ron
nie Healan officiating. Burial with
Military Honors was in the Garden
of Honor of Evans Memory Gardens.

were Zach Moore, Russell Moore,
Jeff Thompson, Terry Kelly, Jeremy

Virginia Appleton
Virginia Bell Appleton died
peacefully on
Thursday April
26, 2018, at
the Brookside
Senior Living
Facility in Com
merce, Ga.
Virginia was
born in Buck-
head, Ga. on
December 20,
1936, the daugh
ter of Joseph
Merritt Bell and
Gladys Harper Bell. She graduated
from Morgan County High school
and attended Mercer University. One
summer during college, she worked
in the dining hall at Ridgecrest Bap
tist Retreat Center in North Carolina.
The handsome, young Jon Appleton
sat at her table. That was the begin
ning of a love affair that lasted 62
years. They were married on August
19, 1956, at the Madison Baptist
Church in Madison, Ga.
Jon and Virginia’s first home
was in Louisville, Ky. Jon attended
seminary and Virginia studied at the
School of Medicine University of
Louisville. She was a member of the
first class to receive certificates as
cytotechologist.
They moved to Gadsden, Ala.,
where their daughter Catherine was
bom. They lived in Opelika, Ala. and
Montgomery, Ala., before moving
to Athens, where Virginia put down
deep roots. She loved her church and
the community.
Virginia served on many Boards
in Athens, including Athens Play
house/Theater, Athens YWCO, Ath
ens Symphony Orchestra and Guild,
University of Georgia Museum of
Art, Athens Clarke County Library
Foundation, Rabun Gap Guild, and
was a member of Mercer Univer
sity’s Presidents Club.
With her husband, Virginia fos
tered the Callaway, Wilcox Sunday
School Class which became very
popular for young married couples.
She always loved children and for
many years taught the two-year olds
in Sunday School.
She spent many happy summers
in Highlands, N.C. working in her
gift shop. Everywhere she lived she
had wonderful friends who loved her
and today have happy memories of
her listening ear and kindness. She
was a competitive player on the ten
nis court and at the bridge table. She
liked to win.
Virginia’s family wishes to
express their appreciation to her
friends-caregivers, Polly Bums, Con
stance Masango, Elizabeth Allen, the
staff member of Brookside Senior
Living and Compass Hospice.
Virginia was preceded in death by
her husband, Jon Gilbert Appleton.
Survivors include her daughter
and son-in-law, Catherine and Jack
Peay, Highlands, N.C.; four grand
daughters, Kathryn, Laura, Taylor,
and Liza; nine great-grandchildren;
her cherished nephew, Jon Apple-
ton Massey and his family; siblings,
Carolyn and Charles Massey, Joy
and Jack Stephenson, Robert Joe
and Bette Bell, Margaret and Warren
Robinson; and her loving nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at the
First Baptist Church of Athens on
Tuesday May 1. The honorary pall
bearers were Charles Merritt Massey,
Robert Glynn Massey, Jon Appleton
Massey, Robert Joe Bell, Charles
Merritt Massey, and Andrew Jackson
Massey.

Perry Baker
STATHAM - Perry L. Baker, 67,
passed away on Friday, April 27,
2018, at his residence.
A native of Statham, he was the
son of the late Dessie and Lucille
Porter Baker. Mr. Baker retired from
Leon Baker constmction as a carpen
ter. He was known for his love for
NASCAR and various sports. Perry
never missed a NASCAR race when
ever he was able to watch it. He was
of the Baptist denomination.
Survivors include his daughter,
Kelli (Billy) Baker, Bogart; brother,
Robert (Mary Ann) Baker, Winder,
and Jack (Pat) Baker, Hapeville; sis
ters, Faye (John) Whitlock-Banks,
Statham, Inez Gilreath, Winder, and
Diane (Ron) Ratliff, Middleburg, Fla.
The Funeral Service was held on
Tuesday, May 1, in the chapel of
Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Ron
nie Healan officiating. Burial was in
Barrow Memorial Gardens.

Virginia Collins
WINDER - Virginia L. Tapp Col
lins, 92, passed away Saturday, April
28, 2018.
A native of Sebring, Ohio, Vir
ginia was a member of Cornerstone
Christian Church and was a volunteer
at Barrow County Christian Acad
emy. She was a beloved mother, wife
and friend to many. Virginia was pre
ceded in death by her parents, George
and Florence McGranahan Stillman;
her husband, Jack A. Collins and a
sister, Jo Ann Miller.
Survivors include two sons, Hal
Tapp (Debbie), Winder and Rick
Tapp (Kimmi), Winder; a daughter,
Dottie Fumea (Ray), Winder; broth-
er-in-law, James Miller; seven grand
children; eight great-grandchildren;
one great-great-granddaughter; three
nieces; and two nephews.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, May 2, in the chapel of
Smith Funeral Home, with pastors
Hal Tapp, Rick Tapp, Ray Fumea,
Ray K. Fumea and Scott Cox officiat
ing. Interment was in Barrow Memo
rial Gardens.

Jack Culpepper
CHESTERFIELD, SC - Jack D.
Culpepper, 59, suffered a fatal heart
attack while fishing with friends on
April 21, 2018.
Bom in Americus/Sumter County,
Ga. on March 2,
1959, Jack spent
his childhood
years in Butler/
Taylor County,
Ga., where
he excelled in
sports and aca
demics, gradu
ating second
in his class in
1977. Following
high school, he
enlisted in the
United States Navy, serving honor
ably for five years.
Jack received his Bachelor of Sci
ence in Forest Resource Management
from the University of Georgia in
1996, graduating magna cum laude.
In 1998, he earned a Master’s degree
in Forest Resource Management and
Business.
Since 2003, Jack was employed
by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser
vice. For the past 11 years, he served
as Forester for the Carolina Sandhills
National Wildlife Refuge in McBee,
S.C. and the Pee Dee National Wild
life Refuge in North Carolina.
Jack was preceded in death by his
father, Jack Culpepper in 1998.
Survivors include his mother
and stepfather, Nettie Jo and Lamar
Perry, Ila; sisters, Myra C. (Philip)
Morris, Athens, Pat Culpepper, Deca
tur, Jolyn Culpepper, Ila; niece, Abi

Robert Davis
Robert Lee Davis, 87, died April
23, 2018.
Mr. Davis was the son of the late
Homer and Stella Sorrells Davis and
was a United States Army Veteran.
He was preceded

Loye Etheridge
Sarah Loye Etheridge passed into
eternal glory with the Lord on April
10, 2018.
Loye was bom February 18, 1964,
the daughter of Sarah and Robert L.
(Bob) Etheridge of Winder. She was
an active citizen in the community by
her participation in various school,
civic and church organizations. Ms.
Etheridge was particularly fond of
music as was demonstrated by her
singing in the Winder-Barrow High
School chorus and a four-year mem
ber of the Bulldogg marching band
and symphonic concert bands. After
graduating with honors from WBHS
and attending Brenau University,
where she pledged Alpha Gamma
Delta sorority, Loye pursued many
career interests with an eye on phar
maceutical production at the Elan
Company in Gainesville, Ga. Not
only was Loye a prodigious reader,
but her interests varied from visiting
the blue waters of Hawaii to skiing
the Austrian Alps.
Since returning to Winder some
years ago, Ms. Etheridge had endured
declining health and was preceded in
death by her older brother, Robert
(Kirk) Etheridge.
Survivors include a brother, W.
Dan Etheridge (Sandy); and a niece,
Claudia Kirkland Etheridge.

COMER - Virginia Helen Gentry,
94, passed away on Thursday, April
26, 2018, at her residence.
Mrs. Gentry was born in Winder,
Ga. on November 5, 1923, the daugh
ter of the late Joseph Worley Dean
and Bertie Lee Coile Dean. She
was a seamstress having worked at
Comer Manufacturing and a member
of Meadow Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by her husband,
Clyde L. Gentry; brothers, Dewitt
Dean, Waymon Dean, Richard Dean,
Jack Dean, Hugh Dean and James
Dean; and sister, Lillian Dean.
Survivors include her sisters and
brothers-in-law, Rachel and Hugh
Bridges, Kannapolis, N.C., Char
lotte and Kenneth Gunnells, Comer,
Agnes and Furman Fitts, Daniels-
ville, and Marie and Gene McElroy,
Commerce; and several nieces and
nephews.

battle with cancer.

nie) Preston; aunt, Betty Mobley;
sister-in-law, Cheryl Cleghom; many
beloved cousins; and her dog, Pug,
and cat, Miss Kitty.
Cathy was a lifetime resident of
the Athens area, a member of First
United Methodist Church, often
attended Hull Baptist Church, and
was a member of the Hull Civic
Club. She graduated from Athens
High School in 1966 (go Trojans).
Cathy was active for many years in
the L Z Friendly organization. She
was a caregiver for 20+ years.
She enjoyed fishing, traveling, and
all kinds of puzzles. Cathy loved
meeting and spending time with
people. She was known for a bright,
cheery smile for everyone she met.
Cathy sends her love and thanks
to all her friends and relatives for
their prayers and support during her
illness. She sends special thanks to
the caregivers and nurses at The Oaks
of Athens.

He was the son of the late Frank

for 40 years.

COLBERT - Geneva Betty Mize
Potts, 85 entered into rest Friday,
April 27, 2018.
Mrs. Potts was born in Amolds-
ville, Ga., the daughter of the late
Julian Olin Mize and Mary Lue Brad-
berry Mize. She worked as a demon
strator with Sam’s Club, and was one
of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Mrs. Potts
was preceded in death by two sisters,
Ann M. Bruce and Mary Daniels;
brothers, Delmas Cooper and Hoyt
Cooper; and her husband, Odell Jack-
son “O.J.” Potts.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry
Potts and his wife Mary, Bartow,
Fla., Tommy O. Potts, Lizella, Tim
Potts and his wife Lillie, Elberton;
daughter, Shirley Potts Aaron and her

Sybil Simpkins
COMMERCE - Sybil Tucker
Simpkins, 92 passed away Tuesday,
April 24, 2018.
Bom on July 9, 1925, in Cames-
ville, Ga., she was the daughter of the
late Jim and Eula Westbrooks Tucker.
She was the widow of Carl A. Simp
kins, retired from Sears, a member of
First Baptist Church Commerce, and
was preceded in death by a daughter,
Pam Simpkins.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Dennis “Bo” and
Nancy Simpkins, Suwanee; daugh
ter, Cindy Wells, Commerce; sister,
Eloise Tucker, Commerce; grandchil
dren, Jason Shriver, Brian Shiver,

Rosemary Sykes
Rosemary Rolt Sykes passed away
on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
Born in Thomasville, Ga. on
March 9, 1947, Rosemary was the
daughter of the late Oris Raymond
Rolt and Annie Mae (Ann) Barber
Rolt of Thomasville. She was pre
ceded in death by a sister, Carol Rolt
Fleming
Rosemary was named by her
grandfather, Raymond Charles Rolt.
In 1939, Mr. Rolt bought a building
which was part of Young’s Female
College and converted it into The
Rosemary Inn. It was the winter
home of many Northerners during
that era. Mr. Rolt grew beautiful roses
and camellias in the gardens there,
grafting and naming a special camel
lia for each of his granddaughters.
Rosemary and her family lived in the
inn for a brief period of time after
she was born.
During her youth, Rosemary was
a faithful member of First Presbyte
rian Church, where she was active
in the choir and youth fellowship.
Her fondest memories were attending
the Presbyterian Music Conference
in Montreat, N.C. with her church
friends in the summer.
In 1965, Rosemary graduated
from Thomasville High School. She
attended Valdosta State College and
later became a flight attendant for
Eastern Airlines. After her marriage,
she and her family moved to Atlanta,
Ga. She worked at BP Air for sev
eral years before moving home to
Thomasville.
Rosemary was a sweet, gentle, and
kind-hearted person who dearly loved
her family.

(Kari) Sykes, Alpharetta, Ga.; her
former husband and father of her
children, Quintin Sykes, Jr., Thom

Jessie Mae Weaver
Jessie Mae Bruce Weaver was
born on January 30, 1933 and passed
away peacefully in the company of
her family on Thursday, April 26,
2018.
She was the oldest of two children
born to tenant farmer parents Char
lie and Ethel Bruce in rural Madi
son County,
Ga. Gradu
ating from
Danielsville
High School
in 1950, she
soon there
after met
and married
her husband,
Thomas
Clark Weaver
in August of
1950. They
were married
for 51 years. They established a
household in Jefferson, Ga. for one
year and then moved to Braselton,
where she and Thomas worked and
lived for the remainder of their lives.
Thomas taught Vocational Agricul
ture at Braselton High, later Jackson
County High School for many years,
while Jessie Mae was a homemaker
and loving mother of four children.
As a school teacher’s wife, she was
active in PTA, Farm Bureau and other
local organizations. As a Vocational
Agriculture teacher’s wife, she was
involved in the many activities of the
local FFA chapter, including chicken
barbeques and other fundraising and
food-related events. She was also the
wife of a fire chief, as Thomas helped
organize and served as the first chief
of the West Jackson Volunteer Fire
Department.
In 1956, she and Thomas pur
chased a small farm in Braselton that
she helped manage, where the family
produced broiler chickens, honey
bees, cattle and peaches. She was
a devoted Christian and member of
Zion Baptist Church in Braselton,
where she sang in the choir and
served in various leadership capaci
ties during her active membership
there. During her later years she was
a member of the Martha Friendship
Class. Jessie Mae was an excellent
cook and could be counted on to
serve an outstanding meal whatever
the occasion, with many of the basic
ingredients provided by the family
farm. Thanksgivings and Christmas
celebrations at her home were always
special occasions. She was a Univer
sity of Georgia Bulldog fan, regularly
attending home football games. She
was an avid reader and enjoyed read
ing books of all genres. Following
Thomas’s retirement, they traveled to
such places as New York, Branson,

Thomas Charles Bruce preceded her
in death.

vived by a host of nieces and neph

at Memorial Park East Funeral Home
in Braselton, followed by a memorial
service.

JEFFERSON - Wayne Milton
Wiley, formerly of Anderson, S.C.,
died Wednesday, April 25, 2018.
He was the son of the late Samuel
Lee Wiley and
Emma Poole
Wiley. He
was born in
Oglethorpe
County, Ga. on
September 23,
1923, but he
resided in Ste
phens County,
Ga. most of his
early life. He
and Gwendo
lyn Whitmire
were married on May 25,1946. They
lived in Anderson, S.C. from 1947 to
2002. He was preceded in death by a
sister Louise Jarrett; and son-in-law,
Daniel Rainey.
Mr. Wiley graduated from Ste
phens County High School and
Kansas City, Mo. School of Watch
making. He was watchmaker for
Cochran Jewelry in Anderson, S.C.
for 33 years and for Phil Jewelers
for 20 years. He was a veteran of
World War II, serving in Fort Leon
ard Wood, Mo., and in France and
Germany. He was an active member
of the 137th Ordnance Association.
In Anderson he was a member of
Pope Drive Baptist Church for 51
years, a member of the King Sunday
School Class, serving as Deacon and
R.A. leader. He and his wife moved
to Jefferson in 2002 and joined the
First United Methodist Church and
the Stan Escoe Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife, Gwen;
son, Richard Wiley and his wife
Gayle, Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter,
Beth Rector and her husband Mike,
Jefferson; four grandchildren, Jason
Wiley and his wife Ginger, Freder
ick, Md., Dana Christmas and her
husband Kevin, Charlotte, N.C., Ross
Rainey and his wife Maria, Jefferson,
and Ellen Rector, Jefferson; eight
great-grandchildren, Amelia, Braden,
Adelyn, Elliot and Jesse Wiley, Will
and Jackson Christmas and Harrison
Rainey; two step-granddaughters,
Mandy Carey and Jamie Walker; and
two sisters, Hylon Beaty and Betty
Williams.
A graveside service was held on
Saturday, April 28, at Forest Lawn
Mausoleum in Anderson, S.C. A
memorial service was held Sunday,
April 29, at Evans Funeral Home in
Jefferson.
Memorials may be made to Jack-
son County Meals on Wheels or
Jefferson First United Methodist
Church.

Pittman Yearwood, 93, passed away
Tuesday, April 24, 2018.
Mrs. Yearwood loved spending
time with her family. She enjoyed
gardening, fishing and visiting muse
ums. She was preceded in death by
her husband, J. E. “Jake” Yearwood.
Survivors include her sons, John.
E. Yearwood and wife Susan, Lake
Oconee, and David Yearwood and
wife Amy, New York; brother, James
Pittman and wife Mary, Virginia;
grandchildren, Andrew Yearwood
and wife Misty, Suwanee, Katie Ste-
jback and husband Billy, Statham,
Kelli Givens and husband Joel,
South Carolina, Elizabeth Morgan
and husband Brad, New York, J.D.
Yearwood and wife Jamie, Denard
Yearwood and Taylor Yearwood, all
of North Carolina; and nine great
grandchildren.
The family will hold a private
memorial service and interment at a
later date.

Michael Fitzgerald.
A loving family survives Mrs.
Yonce, which includes her husband,
David Yonce, Athens; four daughters,
Melissa Yonce Hayes and her hus
band Robert, Athens, Jessica Davis
and her husband Benjamin, Athens,
Crystal Colley and her husband Wes
ley, Jefferson, and Carey Wood and
her husband Jamie, Rockmart; grand
children, Wyatt Davis, Caitlin Hayes,
Erica Wood, Helen Hayes, Lydia
Davis and one on the way; five broth
ers, Ben, David, Kenneth, Johnny
and Donnie Fitzgerald; three sisters,
Mary Smith, Brenda Loggins, and
Darlene Mealor; many nieces and
nephews; and a beloved dog, Sugar.
Funeral services were held Tues
day, May 1, from the Chapel of Evans
Funeral Home with the Pastor Jesse
Mealor officiating. Gentlemen hon
ored as pallbearers are Tripp Mealor,
Chris Fitzgerald, David Fitzgerald,
Anthony Logins, Benjamin Fitzger
ald and Grant Tipton. Burial was in
Evans Memory Gardens.
