Local animal-welfare nonprofit receives $5K grant
Leftover Pets, a non-profit ani
mal-welfare organization in Bar-
row County, has received a $5,000
grant investment from the newly
named Petco Love to support its
work, organization leaders an
nounced this week.
Petco Love, also a nonprofit,
was founded in 1999 and has in
vested $300 million to date in
pet adoption and other lifesaving
efforts, according to a news re
lease. The organization has found
homes for more than 6.5 million
pets through partnershiips with
Petco and more than 4,000 orga
nizations nationwide, according to
the release.
“Today Petco Love invests in
Leftover Pets and hundreds of oth
er organizations across the nation
working to improve animal health
and welfare as part of our commit
ment to creating a future in which
no pet is unnecessarily eutha
nized,” said Susanne Kogut. pres
ident of Petco Love. “Our local
investments are only one compo
nent. This year, we also launched
the first of our national tools, Pet
co Love Lost, which empowers all
animal lovers to drive lifesaving
change right alongside us.”

and chief administrative officer
for Leftover Pets. “This grant in
vestment will allow us to provide
spay/neuter and vaccinations for
more than 100 community cats
and give them a chance to live
healthier lives. Litter prevention is

nasia at local shelters. We are very

sen to support our community cat
program in Barrow County since
2017.”
Leftover Pets provides low-cost
spay/neuter services for pet dogs
and cats as well as community
cats in Barrow County. According
to statistics from the organization,
since 2017 it has provided 415 live
outcomes for feral cats at Barrow
County Animal Control through
return to field and bam cat place
ments; sterilized and vaccinated
848 community cats by means of
trap-neuter-return; spayed or neu
tered more than 3,300 adoptable
dogs and cats for Barrow County
Animal Control; and spayed or
neutered more than 9,000 pet dogs
and cats.

Adventure Bags selling raffle tickets
Barrow County-based nonprofit Adventure Bags,
Inc. is currently selling raffle tickets as part of its
“Shooting with the Sheriff’ fundraiser.
Tickets are $10 each, and those who enter will
have a chance to have four hours on the Barrow
County Sheriff’s Office gun range with nine guests
of their choosing along with Sheriff Jud Smith and
deputies.
The sheriff will provide the gun range, guns,
ammunition, targets will feed the winner and their
guests lunch.
The drawing will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at the
10th annual Adventure Bags, Inc. Motorcycle Ride/
Debbie Gori Memorial Ride. The winner does not
have to be present to win, organizers said.
Raffle tickets can be purchased on the organiza
tion’s website at www.adventurebags.org or at its
office, located in the Wimberly Center for Commu
nity Development, 163 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr.
Winder.
Adventure Bags provides book bags with over
night and comfort items to displaced children across
Georgia.

Barrow County 4-H sends
two to State Congress
Barrow County 4-H’ers
compete every year in District
Project Achievement. This
year DPA was held June 11-
13, and Barrow County had
11 middle and high schoolers
compete at Rock Eagle 4-H
Center.
Two senior 4-H’ers, Lau
ren Richardson and Chan
dler Lampp, placed first and
advanced to State Congress,
where they placed third in
their respective categories this
month.
Charlie Snyder, Erica Mc-
Locklin, Kaylin Keen and
Kelly Coles all placed second
in their projects, and Dawson
Teatino placed third. Mya
Buhite and Jesse McGee both
received honorable mentions.
Junior 4-H’ers Katy Stin
son placed first and Weston
Ridgeway second in their
projects.
Since 1942, State Congress
has been the premier compe
tition and recognition event
for high school-age Georgia
4-H’ers. Held each year in
Atlanta, State Congress is a
four-day event that hosts var
ious contests, recognizes 4-H
scholarship recipients, and
honors state 4-H winners in a
variety of projects and compe
titions.

Red Cross blood drive planned next week in Auburn
The American Red Cross will
hold a blood donation drive in
Auburn from 1-6 p.m. Aug. 11 at
the Perry Rainey Center, 16 Col
lege St.
The Red Cross has an emer
gency need for lifesaving blood
amid an ongoing severe blood
shortage, officials said in a news
release. Blood and platelet do
nations continue to be critical
to meet hospital demand and the
public is urged to make an ap
pointment to give now, officials
said.
The Red Cross has been dis
tributing about 12% more blood
products to hospitals across the
U.S. compared to this time last
year, according to the release,
and needs to collect more than
1,000 additional blood donations
each day to meet the current hos
pital demand and end the short
age. Donors of all blood types are
needed, especially type O, which
stands at just a one-day supply
currently, officials said.
As a thank-you, all who come
to give through Aug. 15 will
automatically be entered for a
chance to win an exclusive, VIP
trip for two to the sold-out 2021
Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival,
according to the release.

Pursuant to O.C.G.A $21-2-131(a)(1), the governing authority of the Town of Carl
announces the following qualifying fees for the local offices to be filled in the
2021 Municipal General Election:
