Obituaries
Margaret White Chappell
Margaret White Chappell, 81, passed away
Wednesday, October 11, 2023, after a short stay
in hospice care at Winder Center for Nursing and
Healing.
Margaret was bom September 9, 1942, in Ope
lika, Alabama, to the late Rev. Leeman and Julia
Mae White. She was a member of Ebenezer Bap
tist Church, Dacula.
Mrs. Chappell was preceded in death by son,
David Anthony Chappell; and siblings, Faye Chil
dress, Mary Dupre and Weyman White.
She held several business and medical office po
sitions as she moved around the country with her
husband’s job. Margaret was a great encourager
and loved sending cards to those who needed a
word of sympathy, get well, or just an ‘I am think
ing of you’ card.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Chap
pell, Hoschton; sons, Michael Chappell, Tempe,
Arizona, and Wallace (Deanna) Chappell, Auburn;
and grandchildren, Avery Chappell, Auburn, and
Olivia Chappell, Mesa, Arizona.
Following her wishes, her cremains will be in
terred at Garden Hills Cemetery, Opelika, Ala
bama, at a later date. No other services have been
scheduled.

John Earl Cox
BOGART — John Earl Cox, 89, Bogart, passed
away on Friday, October 20, 2023.
Earl was bom in Wal
ton County and was
a graduate of Bogart
High School. For many
years, he was a member
of Living Word Baptist
Church in Bogart.
He was a farmer who
raised cattle, horses and
beagles for hunting. He
enjoyed hunting rabbits
and he loved trading
guns.
He was a country music fan and especially liked
Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson and George Jones.
He also enjoyed Irish Country Music.
He loved being with his family and his many
friends and he was very social and he enjoyed tell
ing jokes. He loved his dog, “Toby”, and he really
loved homemade vanilla ice cream.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby
Holloway Cox and Carl Hampton Cox; his wife of
61 years, Sue Cox; his son, John Michael Cox; and
his brothers, C.H. Cox, Julian Cox, Clarence Cox,
Vivian Cox, Kenneth Cox and Ed Cox.
Earl is survived by his children, James Mercer
(Christy) Cox, Jerrett Scott (Teresa) Cox and Don
na Claire McElhannon; 10 grandchildren, Shane
Cox, Brian Cox, Haley Parton, Kayla McElhan
non, Cody McElhannon, Lawrence Cox, Rosa
Cox, Anna Cox, Allie Cox and Amber Mason; six
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grand-
children.
Smith Funeral Home, Winder, is in charge of ar
rangements.

Van Elliott
WINDER — Van Elliott, 81, Winder, passed
away peacefully on Saturday, October 21,2023.
Mr. Elliott was bom
and raised in Barrow
County. He was a ded
icated member of the
Auburn First Baptist
Church and a former
member of Winder First
Baptist Church.
Van attended Young
Harris College, Georgia
Southern College, and
worked for the Georgia
Department of Trans
portation.
He joined the United States Air Force, and he was
honorably discharged after his years of service. Mr.
Elliott then became a banker with the Bank of Bar-
row where he had a successful banking career.
Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by his parents,
James Kelly Elliott and Dora Mae Little.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his loving wife of 53
years, Hazel Rolader Elliott, Winder; siblings,
Dwayne Elliott, Carl, Nelson “Doc” Elliott, Cairo,
and Gaylan E. Nix, Gainesville; along with numer
ous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service: Monday, October 23, 2023, at
11 a.m. in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with
the Revs. Chris Parkin and Lee Sass officiating.
Burial will follow the service at Barrow Memorial
Gardens.
Family to receive friends: Sunday, October 22,
2023, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.
The family has requested that flowers please be
omitted and donations be made to the Auburn First
Baptist Church, 1385 6th Avenue, Auburn, Geor
gia 30011.

Rebecca “Becky” Fitzpatrick
COMMERCE — Rebecca “Becky” Fitzpat
rick, 66, Commerce, died Wednesday, October 18,
2023, at her residence.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick was bom in Commerce to the
late Garland and Mary Brown Shubert. She was
retired from the office of the registrar at the Uni
versity of Georgia.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick is survived by her husband, Phil
lip Fitzpatrick, Commerce; daughter, Misty Fitz
patrick Saville, Commerce; son, Michael Fitzpat
rick, Commerce; and grandchild, Beau Shannon.
No services are planned at this time.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, is in

Reuben Carlton Gailey
MORTON, MISSISSIPPI — Reuben Carlton
Gailey, 92, Morton, Mississippi, passed away
peacefully on Thursday, October 19, after a brief
illness.
He was bom on Au
gust 27, 1931, in Com
merce to Leatus T.
Gailey and Nettie C.
McGinnis.
He is survived by
daughters, Susan Payne
(Chris), Madison, Mis
sissippi, and Laurie
Howren (Chris), Ken-
nesaw; and six grand
children.
The family would

Gentiva Hospice, the nurses and hospice workers
at Baptist Hospital, and his many neighbors. Your

Diane D. Heim
INDIAN LAND, SOUTH CAROLINA — Di
ane D. Heim, 88, Indian Land, South Carolina,
passed away peacefully on Friday, October 13,
2023, at her home with her daughter by her side.
Bom March 13, 1935,
in Hartford, Connecti
cut, she was the daugh
ter of Raymond and
Hilda (Ludwig) Dubek.
Diane lived in Connecti
cut and MAassachusetts
before moving to Geor
gia in 1978, where she
more recently lived in
Winder for many years
before moving to South
Carolina two years ago.
She was a member of Winder First United Meth
odist Church where she enjoyed being in the choir.
Diane worked for the Federal Government at the
CDC and Nuclear Regulatory Commission and af
ter 21 years of service, she retired in 2001.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing, playing card games
and volunteering, which included annual retreats to
Berry College in Rome, and with the Hospice As
sociation of Gainesville, to name a few. Through
out her life her biggest joy was being with people.
She was predeceased in 2021 by her former hus
band, Maxwell A. Heim.
She is survived by four children, Kenneth Heim
and his wife Laura, South Carolina, Mark Heim
and his partner Cindy Staton, Massachusetts, Ran
dy Heim, Massachusetts, and Brenda Heim, Geor
gia; sisters, Judy Bigl and her husband Wil, Con
necticut, and Rae White, Maine; brother, Richard
Dubek and wife Laura, Arizona; six grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Winder at a
future date.

Jerry “Dennis” Lord
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — Jerry
“Dennis” Lord passed away in Charlotte, North
Carolina on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
He was bom January
17, 1943 to Mack and
Lois Lord. He grew
up in Commence, and
graduated from Brew-
ton Parker Jr. College
and the University of
Georgia, to receive his
masters and PHD in Ge
ography.
Dennis enjoyed play
ing golf. He was a re
markable individual
who lived a life of integrity, kindness, and devo
tion. He was a pillar of strength for loved ones and
a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege
of knowing him.
Professionally, Dennis was a dedicated Profes
sor of Geography at the University of North Car-
olina-Charlotte, retiring in 2005 after 35 years of
teaching. Dennis’ commitment to excellence and
his ability to mentor and inspire others left an un
deniable mark on the lives of those with which he
worked with, and the students he mentored through
the years.

Betty Hood Lovern
WINDER — Betty Hood Lovem, 89, Winder,
went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, October
3,2023.
She was a 57-year member of Hickory Grove
Baptist Church. She was influential in the lives of
many of her Sunday School students. Betty also
served in the medical field as a CNA and ward
clerk. She was a talented, strong, virtuous woman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George
and Pearlie Hood; siblings, Jean Garritoni, Jimmy
Hood and Pallie Griffeth; and brother-in-law, W.A.
Pittman.
Betty is survived by her sisters, Geneva Pittman
and Joanne (Harry) Stephenson; her children, Mon
te (Joyce) Chambers, June Davis, Shelley (Ronald)
Kelley, Scott Lovem and Timothy (April) Lovem;
10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service: Saturday, October 28, 2023, at
1 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hickory Grove
Baptist Church.
