George Thomas “Tommy” Patterson
George Thomas “Tommy” Patterson, 76, hus
band of 47 years to Carol Phillips Patterson, died on
Monday, October 16, 2023.
Bom in Athens, he
was the son of the late
Cleo and Reba Carter
Patterson; father to the
late Scott Means; and
brother to the late Bill
Lance, Betty Black and
Bob Lance.
Tommy and his broth
ers operated Bill’s BBQ
for 34 years until their
retirement. He served
in the U.S. Army, re
tired from the Madison County School System as a
bus driver and had worked for the Western Electric
Telephone Company.
As a farmer he raised sheep on the family farm
and had poultry houses as well.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one
son, John (Charmaine) Means; grandchildren,
Melany, Casey, Jasmine, Joija and Matthew; and
great-grandchildren, Oaklyn, Oliver and Catelyn.
Graveside service: Saturday, October 21,2023, at
11 a.m. at the Patterson Family Farm, 265 Sanders
Road, Hull.
Family to receive friends: Friday, October 20,
2023, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eula Mae Latty Shaw
PENDERGRASS — Eula Mae Latty Shaw, 85,
Pendergrass, entered rest Monday, October 16,
2023.
Mrs. Shaw was bom
in Jackson County, a
daughter of the late Les
ter Duel Latty and the
late Nellie Mae Fleming
Latty. Mrs. Shaw grad
uated from Lyman Hall
School, was a member of
Belmont Baptist Church
and was retired from
Liberty Mutual Insur
ance Company.
In addition to her par
ents, Mrs. Shaw is preceded by her husband of 58
years, Gene Durward Shaw; brother, Duel Junior
Latty; sister, Nellie Grace Latty; and brothers-in-
law, Harold and Randall Shaw.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Shaw, Pend
ergrass; daughter, Darlene Shaw, Talmo; broth
er, Harley Latty, Gainesville; sister, Beulah Land
(Donald), Pendergrass; sisters-in-law, Betty Jo Lat
ty, Talmo, Marilyn Carlyle, Hiawassee, Vera Dean
Weatherford, Pendergrass, and Kay Gearin (David),
Braselton; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Shaw, Pen
dergrass, and W.F. Shaw (Pat), Winder.
Funeral service: Thursday, October 19, 2023, at
2 p.m. from the Belmont Baptist Church with the
Reverend Bill Compton and Barry Latty officiating
with burial to follow in the Belmont Baptist Church
Cemetery. Gentlemen honored as pallbearers are
Bart Latty, Jay Latty, Jase Latty, Jeff Sandrock,
Cade Sandrock, Joel Murphy, Joe Lancaster and
Dillon Shaw.

18, 2023, from 4-7 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home.

Melvin E. Sims
COMMERCE — Melvin E. Sims, 89, Commerce,
died Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at his residence.
Mr. Sims was bom
in Pansey, Alabama,
to the late Andrew W.
and Winnie Lee Tolar
Sims. He was a mem
ber of Maysville Baptist
Church where he served
as a deacon for 25 years
and a veteran of the
United States Navy. Mr.
Sims was retired from
Walmart.
Mr. Sims is survived
by his wife of 65 years, Merlene Scarborough Sims,
Commerce; daughters, Karol Davis and DeLisa
Fischer (Michael), both of Commerce; four grand
children; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral service: Friday, October 20, 2023, at
2 p.m. at Maysville Baptist Church with Dr. Shane
Roberson, the Revs. Michael Fischer and James
Dumas officiating. Interment will follow in Jackson
Memorial Gardens.
Family to receive friends: Thursday, October 19,
2023, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
