BCSS announces 2023-24 REACH Scholars
Barrow County School System announced the
following students as the 2023-2024 REACH
(Realizing Educational Achievement Can Hap
pen) Scholars:
• Atir Britt - Arts and Innovation Magnet
• Tarajah Wilburn -Bear Creek Middle School
• Arely Curiel - Haymon-Morris Middle School
• Amarianna Lamar - Russell Middle School
•Liliana Lopez- Westside Middle School
REACH is a statewide mentorship and col
lege scholarship program. Scholars are paired
with a mentor and an academic coach through
high school. They must maintain good behavior,
grades and attendance, and graduate from high
school. Scholars who successfully complete
the program are awarded a $10,000 scholarship
that can be used at any HOPE eligible college
in Georgia. Many colleges are matching or dou
ble-matching these funds. The scholarship is
awarded in addition to any other grant or schol
arship the student receives.

Yargo Elementary students named
winners of Oconee River Soil and Water
Conservation District’s poster contest
Oconee River Soil and Water
Conservation District (SWCD)
offered the Georgia Associa
tion of Conservation District’s
(GACD) poster contest to pub
lic, private and homeschooled
students from Kindergarten
through fifth grade in the schools
throughout the Oconee River
SWCD. Each year, the winning
posters reflect GACD’s annual
Stewardship theme and high
light the work of Conservation
Districts to protect and enhance
natural resources. This year’s
theme “One Water” promotes
protecting water quality within
our local watersheds.
Three overall winners in each
of the K-5th grade categories
were chosen from many creative
poster contest entries.
The third-place winner in
the 4th-5th grade was Ray-
ven Holmes, a student at Yargo
Elementary School, winning
$10.00.
The second-place winner was
Bowie Ramlow, a student at Yar
go Elementary School, who won
$15.00.
The first-place winner was
Jenny Nguyen, a student at Yar
go Elementary School, who won
$25.00. All first-place entries
will be submitted to the GACD
State Poster Contest.
The awards were presented
in Jefferson during the Oconee
River SWCD Annual Banquet
on Oct. 19, by GACD’s North
east Regional program manager,
Dana Tripp and the Chairman of
the Oconee River SWCD Board,
Dewey Johnson. GACD and lo
cal Conservation Districts en
courage Georgia’s youth to prac
tice conservation efforts that
benefit Georgia communities.
The Oconee River Soil and
Water Conservation District is
a unit of state government that
manages and directs natural re
source management programs
in Barrow, Clarke, Jackson, and
Oconee Counties.
The District works with farm
ers, landowners, homeowners,
and other units of government
to educate and actively promote
programs and practices that sup
port the conservation, use and
development of soil, water and
related resources.

AIM OPEN HOUSE FOR
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
SET FOR DEC. 5-7
An informational meeting about Barrow County’s Arts
and Innovation Magnet Program, which is a full-day,
lottery-based, arts integration program serving 6th-8th
grade students from all Barrow County School System
middle schools will be held Dec. 5, 6 and 7 at 6 p.m. The
application will be available on the BCSS website and
through its social media pages on Jan. 8, 2024. It will
close at 4 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2024.

Academy, don’t miss Parent Info Night on Tuesday, Nov.
7 at 6 p.m. in the BASA Cafe. Parents of prospective stu
dents will learn about academics, athletics, fine art and
the future of BASA’s students while meeting new friends
and getting fired up to become a Blazer.
