Savannah, June 23.—Police of the
county are looking for T. J. Mowery,
alias John B. Tift, who it is alleged
defrauded the Mercantile Bank and
Trust Co,, ¢f Savannch and the Hiber
nia Bank, Savaunah, out of thirty odd
thousand dollars a few days ago— fif
teen thousand from the former zmd:
; e!gh’teen thousand from the latter, It
is said he obtained the mboney on de
posit of fraudulent certificates of de
positdn New York banks, bought thir
ty thousand dollars worth of Liberty
Bonds from the Citizens and Southern
Benk here and disappeared. His game
was werked smoothly, he representing
himself to be a relative of the promi
nent and wealthy Tift family of this
State. Neither bank here which was
touched is affected even slightly by
the losses., The dirvectors of the banks
have made gcod the amounts person
ally. Mowery is today described as
a notorious crook, wanted in several
places, captured a number of timeg,
and recently escaped from confine
ment in Texcs.
. Mowery, who was at one time
known also as Farnham, had been in
Savannah at a leading hotel for sey
eral days, intérested himself in real
estate here, and made many friends.
He is about 62 years old and has oper
ated under the names also of J. H.
Morris, J. 8. Wortham, J. A. Webb
and Frenk A, Kimball, 1t is believed
he is not far from Savannah and May
he caught before he disposes of his
big Liberty Bonds.

holding a Thomas county fair this Fall
are now well under way and many pai
