‘d'etat on the part of suffrage leaders,
some forty or fifty women qualified as
; voters yesterday under the perma
nent registration law, being the first
women ever registered in Chatham
county.
Led by Mrs., Paschal Strong, vice
chairman of the Leagu of Women vo
ters, acting in the absent of Mrs.
Wymberley Deßenne, the chairman,
directors of the league and others
identifieqd with the suffrage movement
appeared in the tax collector’s office
at 10 o'clock and declared that thev
‘had come to regisier,
“I'm sorry,” said the tax collector'
“but the bhooks are closed.” §
“Of course we understand that the
Looks are closed for the'noxt election,’
said Mrs., SBtrong, ‘“but we are not
asking for that., We are asking to be
enrdlled on the voters bopks, as provi
ded by the code.” ¢
“But the books are closed,” repeated
the tax collector. I
~«“For the next election, yes” said
~Mrs. Strong, and then patiently hut;
firmly explained. “But you see we are-?
; asking l(; register under section 37 of
‘ the code of 1911, which provides tha!
the tax collector must always keep

the registrat ion of voters. That's
the book we want to register in.
