SMITH MEN USE FALSEHOOD .
{ " TO BOLSTER DYING CAMPAICN
. Atlanta, Aug. 31.-~Xn a desperate,
& ) 5 .
‘#leventh hour effort to appeal to pub-
Nic prejudice, Senator Smith’s cam
‘pajgn managers have scatte¥ed broad
cast over the state, a report to the
‘Qheet that Governor Dorsey had dis
charged a white florist named Grant
and-put a negro in his place.
. This,,of course, is a falsechood out
of the whole cloth, and Senator
Smith's managers know it. But like
the drowning man grasping at a straw
they will stop. at nothing to Kolster
umihe fading claims of their dying
candidate,
vé ‘The truth of the matter is, as
stated by T. E. Massangle, keeper of
public b_ui_ldings and grounds, that the l
position of florist was abolished on
account of war time economy. The
‘state now has no florist at all. The
&mo refered to is simply a porter
the executive office, and one of his
_i}tit?‘es is to cut the grass from the
grounds. As a result the state s
ga fing $9OO a year. Here are the ex
'q::;:ets in the case as stated by Mr.
“‘gmfl&
' “Mr. Grant had been employed at
the capitol for & number of years
prior to the time Governor Dorsey!

came into office, When the gover
lnor asumed his ofice, ne laid down
certain rules by which his capitol em
ployes should be governed. Mr.
Grant seemed to feel that his long oe
cupancy of his position made him
| immune from these rules, and he did
i not comply with them.. The Governor
:hadme to speak to Mr. Grant several
times in reference to'being late to his
Iwork, and away from the capitol
‘when wanted. After keeéping a rec:
sorthoon Mr. Grant, I found that his
services were unsatigfactory and so
reported to the governor, who abol
ished the office of florist and told
me to notify Mr. Grant of that fact.
L “Mr. W. B. Wilson, engineer at
the capitol, and Mr. R. B, Evors, as
sistant superintendent, are both thor
oughly familiar with the facts as
above sated. The duties of the ne
gro referred to in Mr. Grant’s card,
‘consist in being a porter in the ex
ecutive office, sweeping floors and
keepng the grass cut and the grounds
clean. No floorist is now employed
at all. Since the abolishment of his
office, the state has saved $900.00
per year."”

ASK 'EM
The future calls to us today.
Shall old time democracy pass away?
Shall we send men to make our laws
who refused to champion our cause?
Is party loyalty but a joke?
|Ask the two Toms, then ask Hoke.
Our brave boys went across the sea
To establish world Democracy,
Phousands in this land remain;
‘Can we believe they died in vain!
Shall wars prevail and no vetoes
spoke?
Ask the two Toms, then ask Hoke.
When angels spoke to the shepherds
* then j
They told of peace on earth for mer,
Times seem ripe *ar that peace today, l
But politics seem in thf way.
Was the heavenly message but a
joke? ,
Ask the two Toms, then ask Hoke.
