prevent an increase in the member

leaders who announced that a prelim
inary canvass indicated sufficien®
votes to defeat the reappointionment
bill.

Washington, Jan. 14—The legisla
tive, executive and judicial appropri
ation bill, carrying approximately a
hundred and thirteen mollions, was
passed by the house today and sent

Panama, Jan, 14.—Action by United
States officers in taking possession
of a small tract of ground east of
Colon, on the Bahia deLas Minas,
has resulted in a dispatch to Wash
ington of formal and energetic pro
test by the Panama government.
On that tract is a hill which is said
to be adapted for works defending the
eastern entrance to the Panama Ca
nal. The note, protests against the
“act of force.”

Washington, Jan. 14.—While oifi
cias here are still pressing their in
quiry today to develop the complete
facts in connection with the fatal
shooting by Japanese sentvy at Viadi
vostok., of Lieut. W. H. Langdon, of
the UUnited States Ciuiser Albany, lat
est reports on the incident to reaci

listing new members. In all of these
schools Mr. Culpepper has found the
beys most enthusiastic in the club

and pig clubs of Crisp is first place
wherever they may take their ex

terious disappearance of a registered
mail pouch said to have contained
more than fifty thousand dollars in
cash, jewelry and money orders.

Memphis, Jan. 14.—Peoples Saving
Bank and Trust Company. one of the
comparatively smaller ‘financial in
stitutions of this city, voluntarily
closed its doors today and announce
ment was made that its affairs would
be placed in the hands of the state
banking department
The bank was capitalized at $2OO.
000 in a statement issued last No
vember, and held deposits of more
than a million. sixty three thousand
dollarg with loans aggregating mil
lion three hundred and fifty two
thousand dollars.
The surplus was given as twenty
thousand dollars.
The bank was not a member of the |
federal reserve system nor of the
local” clearing house associatinn nnd!
