POLICEMAN AT Py AtNe
PLAYS HIDE AND SEEX
WITH 3 MASKED YEGGS
. e e
On Guard at Plains Bank .He pre
vents Rchbhers From entering.
Americus, Ga,, Jan. 17.—J. C. Ar
rington, night marshal at Plains
near here played hide and seek with
thiree masked rchbhers in the Plains
bank last night, after they had “cov
ered” him with revolvers and he
had escaped by falling hackward out
of the chair in which he was seat
ed, when ordered to “throw up your
hands.”
An hcur and a half after the com
mand had been given, while the al
leged yveggs still prowled about on
the outside of the bank, Arrington
called Trvin Anderson, night tele
phone operator, who alarmed citizens
of the itown. As these hurried to
the bank, afoot and in automobiles
the three strangers hurried cut of
town, passing their pursuers as they
went in the direction of the business
section,
Robbers Mear Black Masks.
According to Arrington, he was
seated before @ fire in the bank
building when someone rattleq the
blinds on the rear and then on the
side of the bank building, next to
the Plains Merchantile Company.
Socn three men in black masks, ap
peared at the front of the building,
two of them at the window and one
at the door, according to Arrington
“They could see me sitting in
front of the fire, twenty-five feet
away,” said Arrington, discussing
the affair. “At once they covered
me with pistels, calling me to throw
up my hands. I didn’t raise my
!hands. but instead tipped my chair.
!ba(:szn'ds. and fell into the entrance
'to the cashier’'s box out of their
sight. T kept updeyr cover and they
didn't attempt to break intc the
building. T waited an hour and a
half for them to leave, but they still
hung around. '
“Finally, I crept over to where al
bucket of water sat, near the ;:,'rntnf
and grabbed it, quickly and threw it
intc the fire, extinguishng the bhlaze
and Kkiiling the light. Knowing they
cculd not then see me I proceeded to
call Irvin Anderson, the night tele
phone overater, asking him to rouse
the town. The man baaring the tel
ephone in acticn, knew it was time
to travel, and they disappeared.”
Within a short time cars were
bringing citizens from varicus parts
of the town. The first arrivals, re
ported seeing no other cars about
the town, but it develcped later that
a car, with lights on, was seen stand
ing in front of the hotel about this
time, facing the west, and it disap
peared during the excifement unob
served by anyone. That is the only
clue yet obtained as to the possible
method of flight employed by the
alleged bandits.
