cultural appropriation bill as report
ed to the House today carried a to
tal of thirty-three million five hund

crease of a million eight hundreid

The increase consists of a million
-dollar appropriation fcr the pof

. The appropriation of a hundred
and fifty thousand for Southern field

Twenty thousand was provided for
an experiment of making syrup from
weet potatoes; six hundred and six.

Washington, Jan. 19.—A meeting
of the heads of international unions
whose members are empleyed in the
shipbuilding trades has been calied
fer tomorrow to consider the indus
tyia] situation growing out of the
continued depression in American
shipyards, it was anncunced today
st the American Federaton of La
bor headguarters.
The general situation will be dis
cussed tomorrow, it was said and on
January 24th, labor officials will con
fer with representatives of the Beth
lehem Shipbuilding Cempany, and on
January 27th with a committee rep
resenting the shipbuilders of the At.
lantic ceast districts.
The purpose of labor, it was state
od, is to co-operate cordially with
the shipbuilders in an effort to re
‘duce the cost of production and to
point out where the industry may
be revitalized.

The high spots of interest were all
topped in the announcement by the
president, Dr. T. J. McArthur, that

he an evening occasion and represen
tatives from many clubg all over the
state will be preseni—and Americus
in large numbers. It will be ladies
night too, and the local members are
rermitted to bring their wives, their
sweethearts, each one a lady. Some
speaker of prominence will hold the
right of way that night.

Washington, Jan. 19 —The negro
ropulaticn of Nerfolk is 43,477, an
increase of 73.2 percent, the Census
Burezu anncunced. Whites number
79,243, an increase of 70.6 percent.
Negro population of Portsmouth is
28,242, an increase of 110 percent.
Charleston, 8. C., shows, negroes
32,292, an increase of four percent;
whites 85,617, an increase of 28.3
percent. Cleveland shows negroes,
34,474, an increase of 308.1 per
cent.

Mary Cleen Hicks. wife of Starley
Hicks, shot and killed three of her
foar chi™lcin and herself at the
home here carly today. She was be
lieved mentally deranged, due to a
recent attack of influenza. The chil
aeen were aged six, five and three,
and the position of the bodies in
dicated that they had tried to shield
themeslves. Hicks and an elder
daughter were asleep upstairs at the
