Is Brother of Sam Story, Held for
Killing T. Sol Jones.
Thompson, Ga., Feb. 3.—Following
an investigation by county authori
ties into the shooting and killing of
T. Sol Jones, a prominent McDuilie
county planter, by Sam G. Story, an
other farmer, Sunday, Claude Story
brother of the man held.on the charge
ol murder, was arrested here today
and lodged in the county jail for tak
ing a part in the shooting.
A warrant charging murder was
served on Story, who is owner of
an automobile garage at this place.
and who resides a short distance
from his brother's farm in the coun
ty. He is married.
County authorities say that afte
an investigation it was found that the
altercation bhetween Jones and Sam
Story occurred during Sunday morn
ing on Jones’ farm and that Story
went to his home when he enlisied
the aid of his brother, Claude, and
both, with pistels, proceeded to huni
up Jones.
TEXAS GOVERNOR REQUESTS
PROBE OF STATE PRISONS
Austin, Texas, Feb. 3.—Governor
Neff recommended in a message to
the legislature today that the present
renitentiary system of Texas be in
vesiigated by a committee of not
less than three, nor more than five
“intelligent, honest, courageous citi
zons of Texas ,not now holding pub
lic cffice.”
The committee, which Governm
Nefr refers to as an “informational”
committee, would be appeinted by the
licutenanf governor and the speakes
of the house of representatives. :
The governor said many charges

RAMES S! ACQUITTED
ON MURDER CHARGE
Hamilton, Ga., February 3.—ln the
caye of Harris Rames, charged with
the murder of Oscar Jordan, a verdict
of not guilty was returned. The case
against (Cecil Cook, charged as ac
cessory in the murder of Doc Wil
liams in the triple tragedy at Tip
top April 25, of last year, was thrown
out of court.
OCILLA BANK IS RE-OPENEL
Ocilla, Ga., Feb. 3.—The Citizens
Bank of Ocilla re-opened its doors for
business on yesterday afternoon, havy,

HEAVY SENTENCE
Atlanta, Feb. 3.—Russ Hubbard o
Dawson county, for many years a
political ieader in that section of the
State, a former revresentative in the
Legislature and generally conceded
to be the wealthiest man in the
mountain section of Georgia, was
sentenced in the United States couri
to serve thirteen months in the Fed
eral penitentiary for violating the
vrohibition law he bittrely fought in
the Legislature more than thirteen
years ago.

exander, who conducted the prosecn
tion for the Government, served in
the Legislature with Hubbard and
had been his gtaunch personal friend
for many years.
THREE BARY RATS MOTHERED

Richmond, Va., Feb. 4—A cat
which makes its home in the First
National Bank building was [found
last night nursing and mothering 3
infant rats in a cupboard. The cat,
with her curious litter of young ones
was discovered by John Scheerer,
night engineer.
It has been discovered by govern
ment scientists that if apples are
wrapped in oiled paper they will be
protected from scald. It is expected
that many szrowers and shippers of
fancy fruit will make use of the dis
covery this year.

CELEBRATE MERCER VICTORY
MUST PAY FOR DAMAGES
Macon, Ga., Feb, 4.—City officers
will be asked by Dr, R. W. Weaver,
president of Mercer university, to
-submit a bill for damages done by
- students during the celebration last
Saturday night of the victory of the
Mercer basketball team over Georgia
Tech.
The damage consisted of several
“runs” by the fire department as the
results of alarms sent in by students,
paint dabbed in the front of the city
hall and similar things.
Dr. Weaver said the amount would
be paid out of the community chest
raised and contributed to by students
to defray athletic expenses by thei
student body. ‘

body, the president declared. ‘
