QUARANTINE DOCTOR
~+ SAYS TYPHUS SCARE
BADLY EXAGGERATED
‘Boston, Feb. 19,—Dr. William M
Bryant in charge of the quarantine
station here declared Thursday that
‘New York - appeared to Le unduly
excited over the danger of a typhus
ecpidemic and when told that the Nev
York health authorities had seized
a large number of immigrants whc
were passed through this port incom
pletely deloused, said it was impos:
sible to completely . delouse all per
sons on a vermin-infested ship.
The United States public health
service has laid down certain regu
lations for us to obey he declared
We obey them to the letter. Further
than that the matter is up to Wash
ington to keep disease from being
brought here the government would
have to refuse all immigration and
close the ports to immigration and
commerce. The danger from typhus
has been greatly exaggerated. This
disease can Le carried only by the
body louse. If one is clean and does
not intermingle with lousy persons
he will be in no danger from the
scourge.
