/FLORIDIAN SAYS PRODUCTS ROT
IN FIELDS BECAUSE FREIGHT
CHARGES ARE EXCESSIVE, |
I O e
| Washington, Feb. 23.—Fields of
celery, lettuce and other products in
florida are going to waste because
railroad rates are so high the farmers
cannot afford to ship them to market
Senator Trammell, democrat of Klor
ida, declared yesterday in the senate
in the course of attempts to reduce
the percentage of returns guaran
teed to the carriers under the trans
portation act. The Florida senator
offered an amendment to cut the guar
antee from gix percent to three per
cent, but this was beaten and his se
cond proposal gu make the guarantee
four percent was bowled over in shor:
order. :
Senator Trammell said increased
wages to empleyees was the reason
given for the rate increase and he
- queted figures publisheq at the time
of the last freight rate raises which
! he said, showed only sixteen percent
| of the increase went to labor.
‘ “If you want te start slashing wa
‘, ges, lets begin at the top of the list,”
| the Florida senator asserted, ‘“and
cut ome of these $50,000 salaries to
big officials.” The wages paid to em
plevees, in considering the dangers to
which they were exposed and the kind
of work they did, the senator added,
was not excessive.
' Rates should be reduced, Senator
Trammell continued, adding that the
| his state at lower rateg if they would
: roads could haul citrug fruits from
adopt a policy of “ive and let live.”
Senator Smith, of Georgia, said he
hoped congress would take up the
transportation act and remodel it, for
there were many things in it which in
his opinion were objectionable.
Present freight rates, the Georgia
senator added, were more than the
traffic can bear and are so high on
many commodities that the producer
would get nothing for his output if
he shipped it to market. The senator
said he “had no doubt” many of the
present railroad troubles grew out of
government control; adding that, in
his opinion, a part of the business de
pression was due to the high freight
rates.
