Greensbore, N. C., Feb. 26.—A
Federal court: jury in the case of
Mrs. Florence C. Varner, who sued
her husband, Col. Henry B. Vainer,
Lexington newspaper publisher, for
support, today returned a vewiiet
for the defendant after two da;s of
deliberation.
One of the issues required the jury
to find whether she was guilty or
innocent of the charges of improper
relations with Baxter Mc¢Nary, a
‘wealthy negro at Lexington. The
jury answered this affirmatively.

Washington, Feb. 26.—John R.
Farr, Republican, of Scranton, Pa.,
took his seat in the house today as
vepresentative of the tenth district
as a result of action by the house last
night in voting to unseat Patrick Me-
Lane, Democrat, also of Seranton,
wha has held the seat throughout
the present congress.
Farr will draw $21,000 in salary
and incidental expenses for the six
days he will serve in the house,
while McLane also has drawn his
pay for the entire two years. He
was required to make no refund, the
single seat costing the government
in c¢ffect almost twice the stipulated
ficure.

Washington, Feb. 26.—Final agree
ment by the senate finance committee
on the soldier bonus bill and its report
to the senate today was looked for by
republican leaders.
They continued to express doubt,
however, that the legislution which the
committee has decided to report with
the tax provisions eliminated, could be
passed before adjournment next week.

Washngton, Feb. 26.—With the
tax provision eliminated, the soldier
bonus bill was reported to the sen
ate today by the finance pommit
tee. The cash bonus will be payable
January first 1923, 3
The question of taxes to meet the
cost of the bill was left for the
next congress. Aside from striking
out the tax provision, the committee
made little change in the house bill.
ROADS WILL GET RID OF MUCH

Mexico City, Feb. 26— Confidence
that the government will be able to
maintain railroad schedules with volun
teer help until the workmen who struek
vesterday deeide to resume their posts,
was expressed National Director of
Railways Perez last night. He declared
although the government did not wel
come the walkout, the present situation
offered ‘‘exeellent opportunity to de
sreage the various working forees which
had been maintained above their ne
cessary strength.’’ He declared the
working personnel would be reduced 25
per cent when the final settlement is

12. Lively, the surprise witness in the
Matewan gun fight trial, today was
recalled to the witness stand for cross
examination, Testifying for the
state late yesterday, Lively told a
story that startled the court room.
He testified that h'e was in the secret
servece department of the Baldwin-
Felts detective agency, that he went
to Matewan a month after the gun
battle -and posing as a unicn man,
he opened a restaurant and cultivat od
the acquaintance of scme of the men
on trial. He testified that Sid Hat
field fold him that he killed both
Albert Felts and Mayor Testerman,
and that Hatfield also told him he
would “kill Anse Halfield |ke he
would a dog.”
‘Anse latfield wag shot to death
last August while gitting on the porch
of his hotel and his slayer has never
hecn apjrediended. Lively testified
that he once casually asked Hattield
why he hagd rot married and Hattield
