EIGHT MULES KILLED BY LICKING
* SYRUP-ARSENICBOLL WEEVILPOISON
Farmers and other cotton growers
who use the syrup and arsenic mix
ture for poisoning th~ boll weevil
should beware of the danger to their
live stock from this poison. They
should take warning (anq exercise the
proper precaution as a consequence)
of the experience of a well known
North Georgia farmer who had eight
mules§ killed from poisoning from this
mixture several days ago. These
mules-had been used in plowing in a
cotton field where the mixture was
spread to kill the boll weevils. They
were muzzled while at work in the
fields, but' when turned into the stock
ade .at night the muzzles were remov
ed. During the day quantities of the
mixture, especially because of . its
sticky syrup contents, collected on the
mules’ legs by coming in contact with
poisoned cotton stalks; and because
of. the sweetn'egs of the mixture the
mules liked the taste and licked the
poison .from their legs. The next
‘morning the planter found most of tha
eight mules dead and the others died
during the day. .
Other instances of live stock and
cattle having been killed under similar

THE CORDEILE DISPATCH
circumstances .or having eaten the

Wash Mules’ iLegs.
Farmers in different sections having
learned of the qdanger to their live
stock in the manner in which the
North Georgia planter’s mules were
killed, and realizing that the muzzles
are ineffectiva in eliminating the dan
ger, have adopted the plan of washing |
off the legs and feet of their mules
and other work animals that have heen
used in the cotton fields where the
poison has been sprgad before remov- |
ing their muzzles at night. This plaz |
certainly does net injure the mules, |
but on the other hand is cooling and
beneficial to them, and this plan
seems to be the only safe pree, aution‘
that can be taken, ‘
Farmers of Crisp county are given
warning in this matter and all will fimll
it to their advantage, at least the safer
plan to follow, to adopt the method
of washing off the legs of their mules
and other work animals used in the
cotton fields poisoned with the syrup
angd arsenic mixture. |
