A: Sloan at his country home five miles east of Cordele. The ocea gion was in honor of the birthday of Mrs. Sloan, which occurred on the 17th, and the birthday of J. M. Sloan son of Mr. and Mrs. Sloan, which oc curred on the 15th. The revival at Pleasant Grosc Bap tist «church began Saturday, with Rev. Wallace Wear, pastor of the 'Cordelc Baptist church doing the preaching, and Mr. Newell conduct ing the song services. Everybody is invited to attend the series of meet ing during the revival. It is hoped tfo make this meeting 2 memorable cvent for the benefits resulting from it to the church and the entire community. For this reason it will be well worth sceing. The picture from an original sereen story by Donn Byrne, novclist and shortstory writer, tells of Sorren tina Palombra, the wife of Gabriel. Both run a marionette show in Vene ice; the husband goe salone to New York, and becoming a wealthy gambler, forgets his wife, and marries an adventuress. Sharpe and Will Matthews, negroes, one armed with a turpentine hack knife and the¢ other with a turpen tine barrel stave went to battle this morning at the turpentine still of Mack Hall about 8 miles from here. Will Matthews’ head was smashed in so many places that the doctor had trouble in finding enough left to sew back but he was the victor as the hack knife proved the best weapon and the other negro was kill ed. WAY FOR London, July 18,—With the con gress of prime ministers of the British ¢mpire nearing its close it now is pos sible to sum up its achievements to include the following: It paved the way for and made possible the great disarmament con ference of the world powers. Its deliberations resulted in the decision that the Anglo-Japanese al linnce must be brought into harmony with the covenant of the League of Nations which means that the mili tary’ clause of the treaty must be climinated and it prompted the idea of a conference on Pacific problems which if it be successful, will make the Anglo-Japanese alliancc unneces sary. It created the atmosphere favor able for the step toward the settle ment of the Irish question and pro duced General Smuts to rescue the ne gotiations from failure at an extreme ly critical juncture. : ONE DEAD, EIGHT HURT Reynolds, Ga., July 18—William Costello, a Gypsy, was instantly kill ed four other Gypsies, two being wo men, and four negroes were seriously injured by lightning near here early Saturday nlight during an electrical storm. It is said that the injured may recover. The bolt struck in the middle of a horse trading camp oceupied by a number of Gypsies. Several other Gypsies were stunned. The injured are being taken care of in ‘this city.
