MONDAY JULY 14 1024
. Whenever you think your job is'a hard one;think of the bee. ;
' Remember, that a red clover blossom contains less than one eighth of a grain of sugar, that 7,000 grains are required to
imake a pound of honey, that a bee, flitting here and there for sweetness, must visit 56,000 clover heads for a pound of honey,
and that there are sixty flower tubes to each clover head. When a bee performs that operation sixty times 56,000 or 3,360,000
times, it secures sweetness enough for only one pound of honey! :
. To achieve success one must be persistent and willing to pay the price of persistency.

Locust Valley, N. Y. July 14.—
John W. Davis, Democratic nominee
for Pregident, told correspondents to
day that Senator Walsh, of Mon
_tana, who dined with him last night
‘'was very Sanguine as to the. pros
pects of carrying Middle and North
wes,t.e'g'n states despite the cadidancy
of Senator La Follette. Mr. Davis,
said he expected to make an exten
sive speaking tour of the West,
which Senator Walsh is understood
to have urged.
The nominee spent a restful Sun
day at his country home here ,paying
little attention to politics. He arose
at 7:30 o’clock and took a half hour
%orseback ride to the Piping Rock
ountry Cl#y, returning to attend
' the morning service at St. John’s
Episcopal Church; near his home.
The remainder of the day he spent
resting, receiving an occasional call
er.
+ - Mr. Davis attired in a blue serge
: ‘*u_\it, and a stiff straw hat and carry
ng a walking stick, drove to the
ilittl-e church shortly before 11 o'-
clock, accompanied by his wife; Mrs.
P. M. Watson, of Indianapolis, his
sister-in-law, and Frank L. Polk,
his close friend.
Mrs. Davis is a member of the
charch and Mr. Davis attends the
services frequently when in Locust
Valley. His parents were presbyter
ians.
Among the callers at the Davis
home today were Richard Crane,
former American minister to Czecho
Slovakia, and Gordon Auchincloss,
son-in-law of Col. E. M. House.

Chicago, July 14.—Gov. Charles‘
W. Byran, of Nebraska, Democratic
nominee for the Vice-Presidency, ar
rived here today from Washington
“on his way home from the conven
tion of his pa.ty in New York. He
was accompanied by Justice W. A.
Thompson, nf the Nebraska Supreme
‘Court, and was met here by George
E. Brennan, leader of the Smith for
~ces in the recent convention. After
~an hour’s conversation with Mr.
- Brennan and with newspaper men,
| Mr. Byran left for his home in Line
oln, Neb., wheus he will rest until
lformally notii:2d of piS ncmination.
The man who with John W. Dvis,
of West Virginia will bear the stand
ards of the Democratic party in the
|coming campaign, refused to dis
' cuss his plans as vice presidential
nominee, but speaking as the gover
nor of Nebraska, he reiterated his
often-exprssed opinion of the in
dustrial and agricultural situation.
It is sometimes necessary, he empha
sized, for a government executive to
b take over industries or public utili
ties, “so that the people will get a
square deal or to prevent them from
being deliberatly robbd. Only in
that ‘matter,” he went on, “can we
stop Bolshevism and third parties
from getting a hold in this country.”
) That William Jennings Byran, his
brother, will take an active part in
the campaign he was certain, al
though he said, the arrangement of
such matters must await formal no
