COUGAR ATTACKS MAN
Olympia, Wash., July 17.—An at
tack by a cougar, one of very tew on
record, has been reported from the
Olympic National Forest, Western
Washington, by Glen Merchant, a
fromer forest guard.
Mr. Merchant said the cougar
'sprang from some brush and tore off
a trousers leg and severely scratch
ed him. He hit the cougar on the
nose with g fishing rod, and ran. The
beast did not follow.

BANDITS HOLD UP AUTO
PARTY AND ATTACK GIRLS
Miwaukee, July 18.—A bandit trio
early this morning kidnapped two
girls —twin sisters—after holding up
l’umd robbing their companions at the

At 3 o‘clock this morning the two
girls were found in a dazed condition

central police station. by a passing
automobilfe driver.
One it was found, had been brutal-‘
'ly attacked by two of the men and
the other was on the verge of col
lapse. he had not been attacked, al
though her clothing was ‘prn to
shreds in her fight with the three
men.

Working under provisions of an act
of the legislature dcsignating 2 sys
tem of roads to provide highways
reaching from one end of the state
to the other, the Florida State Road
Department is making steady ‘prog
ress toward completion of the net
work of roads that have a total mile-‘
age of 3,606, In addition to work
being done by the state, counties are‘
bonding themselves and spending
millions of dollars yearly in order
to expedite constructio of the roads.
~ The state road: department has
only about $4,600,000 a year to op
erate on, in addition to labor of a
thousand or more state convicts who
are assigned to road building work,‘
but is going ahead with its progrgm
constructing highways that cost
from $20,000 to $40,000 for the
hard surfaced type, and around $2,-
090 a mile for sand-clay surface.
~ The system provides for a Troad
into Florida from Waycross, Georgia
extending along the east coast to
Miami that will eventually extend
to Key West when the contemplated
Overseas Highway is completed; two
roads through the central part of
the state from north to south; one
Jacksonville to Pensacola, and @
soder from
number of others crossing the penin
sula and western wing at different
intervals. Another, the Tamiami
trail, extending along the west coast
from Tampa through the Everglades
to Miami, is also wunder construc
tion,

The paper as contracted with an
airplane company for this service.
The aviator attaches the papers to
small parachutes and they drift
down somewhere near the habitation
of the subscriber.
This method is saving weeks for the
readers. The old method was to send
accumulated issues by dog teams
once a month.

of the town knockens, they usually
keep living tight where they are in
