DIFFICULTY OF GETTING VICE
PRESIDENTAL ASPIRANT
GROWS
WASHINGTON, July 18.—-There is
an idea that Senator La Follette, as
a candidate for President will cut
guite a swath., There are some stu
dents of politics in Washington who
contend that he has an outside chance
of winning the prize It is quite eom‘-l

At the same time Senator La Fo]-i

William 8. Kenyon, former Senator

- BE PERSISTFNT, THINK OF THE BEE
Whenever you think your job is a hard one;think of the bee.
Remember that a red clover blossom contains less than one eighth of a grain of sugar, that 7,000 grains are required to
imake a pound of honey, that a bee, flitting here and there for sweetness, must visit 56,000 clover heads for a pound of honey,
and that there are sixty flower tubes to each clover head. When a bee performs that operation sixty times 56,000 or 3,360,000
times, it secures sweetness enough for only one pound of honey! :
To achieve success one must be persistent and willing to pay the price of persistency.

LUXURY TARIFF -

AD VALOREM DUTY OF 100 PER
CENT FIXED BY JAP HOUSE
TOKIO, Ju'y 18 — (Bv the Arssoc-l
ciated Press.)—Both houses of the
imperial diet today passed the gov
crnment bill raising the tariff on about
250 articles classed as luxuries to an
ad valorem duty of 100 per cent.
The date the increase will become
effective will he announced in the jm
perial ordiance promulgating the act.
It is understood that the measure will
not_ effect goods already in transit,
an arrangement to this effeet having
resulted from diplomatic represen
tations made by Great Britain andl
France. The bill had been before the
diet ten days.
The increased tariff was opposed
hitterly by importers and other busi
ness! interests dealing in imported |
luxuries. The forelgn community ofi
Kobe went: on record in - opposition
to the increase expressing the convie- |
tion that ¢‘it will make the mainte
nance of an union standard of living
in Japan virtually impossible, thus
doing a grave injustis to the foreign
comamunity.’’
The bill is not intended as a rev
cenue producing measure, according to
means of correcting a national fen
dency toward consumption 0f fur
e'gn made artieles to which it at
tributed in part the mounting of an
adverse trade balance. It also is in
tended to protect domestic industry.
