THE HOUSE BY THE SIDE OF
THE ROAD '
TLere are hermits souls that live
withdrawn ;
In the place of their self-content,
There are souls like stars, that dwell
apart, )
In a fellowless firmament;
There are pioneer souls that blaze
their paths,
Where highways never ran—
But let me live by the side of the road
And be a friend to man,
?.
1 see from my house by the sidé
of the road,
By the side of the highway of
life, i
The men who pass with the orded of
hope, :
The men who faint with the
strife,
But I turn not away from their smiles
ror their tears,
‘Both parts of an infinite plan—
Let me live in a house by the side of
~ "the road.
And be friend to man,
Let me live in my housé by the side
of the rad,
It’s here the race of men go by—
They are good, they are bad, they
are weak, they are strong,
'Wise, foolish—so am I, :
Then why should I sit in the scorn
ers seat, 3
Or hurt the cynic’s ban?
Let me live in the house by the side
of the road,
And be the friend of man.
—Sam Walter Foss.
ADDITIONAL FUNDS NEEDED TO
COMPLETE TALLULAH
SCHOOL
Success is rewarding the efforts of
the committee in charge of the build
ing fund campraign for Tallulah Falls
Industrial school, and the chairman
of the campaign for the State, Mrs.
Z 1. Fitzpatrick declares: “The
Greater Tallulah Campaign will close
at the State Convention in Atlanta
this November and we of the Geor
gia Federation of Women’s Clubs
expect to report a glorious finish for
the work of ‘‘physical expansion and
financial permanevnce” as undertaken
by Georgia Federatlon in Athens two
yaers ago. Since that ime we have
brought the interest-bearing funds
of the school to $36,000 from $13,000
in October, 1922. We have twelve per
mpetual scholarships of $2,000 each.
Some are paid and others are being
paid year by year. This brings us to
the actual money required for. build
ings, repairs and equipment. “W#
have about $12,000 in cash and are
going forward with this to build a
good eight-room school house with
auvditorium, a large crafts house, a
small cottage, and to repair and re
model the three present buildings
and furnish same, and to install a
new water system.
«To complete the buildings of the
Greater Tallulah program as out
lined above and furnish them adequ--
ately will require $40,000 more than
we have in hand. The Atlanta Fed
eration of Clubs is asking the friends
of education in Atlanta to- give us
$20,000 of this amount. The other
$20,000 wil certainly come to us from
other Georgia towns or friends else
where.
The Georgia Federation wants every
member club to organize as the At
lanta Federation is now doing and go
direct to the citizens of the town and
county with the request for gifts to
the club school building fund. Mrs.
Fitzpatrick has been appointed from
