BLACK GOLD HELD |
v+ IN HIGH ESTEEM
5 g \
LOVISVILLB, Ky., Aug. 18 (AP)—
Too much popularity may affect the |
turf career of Black Gold, as it finally
suined famous 01d Rosebud, ten years
ago, in the opinion of Kentucky turf
experts who see in the publie clamor
for the Hoots colt many of the jossi
bilities which brought destiny to Old
Roscbnd,
Not since 1914, when Old Rosebud
won the Kentucky Derby and set the
record for the race at 2:03 1.5, has
there been a race held so high in pnb
lic esteem. Lovers of lorseflesh are
showering their affections of this black
son of Black Tony and the firtle In
dian’ pony, Usecit.
01d Rosebud, afg:r winning the
Derby in 1914, was sent Eost and
broke down during a race at Belmont.
His owners sent him to Texas and
three years later he ~ame back and|
beat Roamer and other leaders. Hef
was 8o popular he was ‘‘raced to
death’”’ and was destroyed two years
ago.
For several years no horse rom-i\'t‘d;
the admiration that wagd Old Tose- |
bud’s. Black Gold mnr!(.;. a bid for it;
Yast winter when he won the Louisiana
Derby at New Orleans. He was Hu-!
favorite in the Kentncky Derby and
came from behind to win the fiftieth
renewnl of tliat classie.
He went on to Cleveland and an
nexed his third derby, the Obio m'nnf.i
His first reversal came in the Latonia
Derby a short time later, when Chil |
howee and Giblon romped home ahead
of him. Like the only race Man O’War
ever lost, turf enthusiasts still are try
ing to expiain how it happened. Black
Gold ahtained revenge by beating Gih
lon by six lengths in the Chicago Der
by. He thus eaqualled the record
made in 1913 by Claude, the only cther
horse that ever won four derbies in
a year, :
