FARMERS TO SETTLE ROUTE

C'olonization of the lands along the
government's Alaska railroad will be
pressed on the secretary of the inter
ict by the railroad management, it
was state here by Captain John
Hughes, in charge of the supply de

It was explained that supplies for
the road were impovied from the

in the bill. They were married in

Turkey and Armenia to report the

old Saxon has resigned as superin
tendent of the Moultrie public
schools, it was announced today hy
the board of education. He will en
gage in another line of work, it was

the Moultrie school system for six

ernor Walker Monday signed the hill}

stituting the electric chair for hang
ing in the state of Georgia. The new
Jaw does not affect men already sen
tenced to he hanged.
The bill provides that the state
prison commission shall install an
electric chair in the state peniten
tiary at Milledgeville, and that all
condemned persons shall be trans
rorted there for execution. The state
is to pay the cost of installing the
chair out of its contingent fund.
(GGovernor Walker has also signed
the resolution providing for an in
vestigation of the Confederate Sol
diers home by a joint committee of
the senate and a house of representa
tives.

LNCOLNTON, Ga. Aug.,, 18.—Jim
Jacobs, confesged ausailant and rob
her of R. F. Gullebeau, prominent mer
chant, in the yard of his home Salur-l
day night was taken by local ol‘ficers‘
to Washington latc Sunday afternoon.
It is learned that he will be c(m-l
fined in” Wilkes County jail awaiting]
his trial during the October term of
the superior court nere. Following
Jacob's confessgipn, it is not known
whether he had confederates in the
rohbery, but officers are working on
the case to ascertain.
A small amount of gilver is yet
missing, Jacobs cla ming he Kaows
rothing of it. Jacobs bears rather a |
bad Icputation and once belure -was\
under suspicion of theft from Mr.
Gullieheaus's store.
Mr. Gulliebeau is stilt in a serious
condition but is expcet d to recover.

IN THE PHILIPPINE ‘SLANDS
MANI.LLA, July 20 (AP)—The death
rate in the Philippine Islands during
the year 1923 was 17.5 per thousand
which is the lowest ever recordeed, ac
cording to a report of the Philippine
Health Service. The 1923 death rate
was eight percent lower than that of
1922 and fourteen percent lower than
in 1921.
