'HARRY JW. COWAN MUST GO TO?
~ ELECTRIC CHAIR FOR KILL
ING HIS SWEETHEART. - 1
NEW, YORK, April 6—Harry W.
Cowan, blind from the same gun}
with which he killed his sweetheart
Monday was sentenced to die in the;
electric chair for the girls murdpr.l
Unless a higher court reverses the
verdict of the trial jury or exccu--
tive clemency commutes his sen
tence to life imprisonment, Cowan
will be the first blind man ever to
be executed in New York state. '
The jury returned a verdiet of
first degree murder several wecks
ago after the blind man’s counsel
based his defense on a suicide pact
between Cowan and Edith Burton,
the dead girl. Cowan is 58 and Miss
Burton 26. She was found dead in
her apartment December 28 last.
Cowan was by her side, a bullet
wound in his head.
The convicted murderer, who per
sistently has protested his innocence
groped hig way into the court room
Monday to hear the sentence of
death during the week of May 10
passed upon.
There was a slight flush on his
face and a leok of dread that had
not been apparent at the trial. Oc
casionally, he clozed his . sightless
eyes tightly as if e were, trying to
keep back tears. He said nothing to
anyone except when called upon by
the ‘clerk to give’ higvpedigree. Then
he ‘spoke in a low wavering voice. -
