Chicago Political Leader |
Is Slain In Gang Warware
CHICAGO, Apr. 12 (£)—The murderlw
of Walter Johnson, gixteenth ward po-‘
litical worker for the Crowe-Barrett-
Thompson faction of the republi(;an}
party, ushered in Chicago’s election
week.
Johnson, known as a “filler” bhe
cause he was so proficient at getting
votes that he could be sent out to
strengthen any precinct . that was
weak, was shot to death and his body
pitched into a ditch along Ridgeland
road where gangsters drive with their
victimg when they “take them for a
ride.” |
State’s Attorney Robert E. Crowe,
a candidate for renomination in Tues
day’s primary, attached great politi
cal significance to the murder.
, “Those are the reform tactics em
ployed to insure honest elections,”
Crowe’s sarcastic comment.
Police learned that Johnson had
left home late Saturday, his pockets
stuffed with republican literature.
The only promising clue to the mur
der was a hastily gcrawled card found
in one of Johnson'’s pockets. It said:
“I was with John Connelly at 3
o’clock and with William Mahon at 4
oclock.”
