QUALITY AT LOW COST
Chateau, Scrvants; Wealth-
Await Acceptance Of Krim
PARIS, April 15—A luxurious
French chateau, servants, automo
hiles and the income of a man’s
wealth—all these may be offered to
Abd-El-Krim, the rebel Riffian chief
tain, if he will depart from his mud
house at Ait Kamara in his native
Modoeco.
Spain has made the departure of
Krim a primary condition of the
Franco-Spanich peace terms which
will be offered the Riffians when
peace negotiations hegin at Ouijda
late this week. France, as the ally
of Spain in Moroccan military opera
tions, is expected to offer Krim 2
life of edse if .he will forsake the
canse of his Riffian compatriots, in
a word, if he will dezert for all time
the people for whom he has fought
during the greater part of his life.
Other Oriental chieftaing have
been given rewards by France in the
farm of official posts, land, or
money when the chieftains have been
content to give up their annoying
military activties, Se giving a cha
tean and an income to Abd-el-Krim
would not be unprecedented action
But judges of Krim’s past actions
see no hope that the rebel leader,
himself a most patriotiec Riffian, will
ever accept the terms that have been
laid down. ’
The demand that Krvim leave Rif
fian territory originated in Spain
France is merely cooperating with
the Spanish officials who have wateh
ed, the activities of the Riffiane
against Spain too long to hold mueh
faith in any promises Krim's nego
tiators may make at a peace parley.
Spain, in fact, has little confidence
in the success of the peace meeting
called for Ouijda. The French of
ficials would be willihe to offer
I Krim a post within the French zone
in Morocco where they could keep a
careful watch over him, but it is
i doubtful if Spain would agree to fhis
i And with the scant hope that Krim
i would agree to leave hos fellow Rif
; fians, even for a chateau and the
| luxuries of a wealthy man in France
the chance of ending Franco-Span--
. ish war with the Riffians seems
. slight, :
