Wilbur Pleased Over
Conquest Of North Pole
WASHINGTON, May 9.—Secretary
of the Navy Wilbur issued the follow
ing statement Sunday night on the re
port of Commander Richard E. Byrds
successful conquest of the north pole:
‘I am delighted to hear that Com
mander Byrd, of the United States
navy, who made a successful rlight to
the pole, has returned safely to his
dase at Kings Bay.
“His intention when he left here
was first to fly to Greenland and es
tablish a base there, covering in his
‘flying to and from Kinrgs Bay a por
tion of the unexplored area hetween
Tthese points.’?
1 ¢‘Evidently if reports are correct,
he seized a favorable opportunity for
a flight to the pole.”’
“That he successfully accomplished
the flight is a matter for congratu
lations to him, to his crew, and to
the nation,”’
“We rejoice in his success and his
safety.”? 2 '
; Lieutenant McDonald, speaking for
Secretary of the Navy Wilbur, said
lSunday night that they had received
further reports from Kings Bay by
rodio which confirmed Byrd's flight
to the pole.
He said the second message report
ed Byrd’s nose and fingers had been
frozen while making observations to
check his conquest of the pole.
