probably survive but both were

Children Hold ‘‘Mutt
Parade In New York
NEW YORK, May 9—Boys and
girls of all sizes, leading dogs of var
fous lengths, heights, and linenslty of
barq, began gathering before noon to
day at Park avenue and 39th street
whence wag scheduled to start at 1:320
o'clock New York's first and most tre
mendous “Mptt Parade.”
There were more dogs than you
could shake a stick at and they were
not the sort of dogs that you shake

any remote claim to pedigree, but
each had a master or mistress, All

NEW YORK, May 19—The little
thedater of Dallas, Texas, won the
Belasco cup in the little theater
tournament which has been in prog
ress this week under the auspices of
the Drama League of America, The
Dallas group thus obtains permanent
poszesgion of the cup, having
emerged visitorious in two former
tournaments. They won this year
with Margaret Larkin’s “Zel-Christo
For the first time in four years
the decision of the judges was not
unanimous, Dallas receiving three
of the five votes and the little thea
ter players of Shreveport, La., two.
In addition to the cup, the Dallag
players won one of the Edwards

QUINCY, I, May 9 —Faithful to
his trust, the big collie dog of Mr,
and Mrs. James Hilly four miles gouth
of Palmyra, Mo, perished in flames,
He had been left to guard a sleeping
baby of the Hills while Mrs. Hill
went to the nedrby woods to get
mushrooms, The barking of the dog
attracted Mrs. Hill's attention and
turning she saw the roof of the one
story houze in flames. y
Running at top sPeed she obsgrved
the dog, beside the baby. She grasp
ed the child and ran out of the build
ing, the roof fallirz as she leaped
through the door, but the dog was a
second too late and perlshed,
Body Of Noted Writer
Found Near His Cottage
SPRINGFIELD, Mo., May 9 (#)—
Sloane Gordon, 56, a w-11-known news
paper and magazine writer, who had
made his headquarters for some
years in Washington and New York
city, was found dead at the foot of
a bluff close to a cottage on white
river,
The condition of the body was said
to indicate that he had fallen from
the top of the bluff. He had been
suffering from heart trouble for some
time and came to the Ozarks about
three months ago in an effort to build
up his health anq finish a book on
which he had been working. He had
written for a number of magazines
and was a member of the staffs of
iseveral metropolitan newspapers. The
ibody will be cremated and the ashes
forwarded to New York. |

Joliet Prison Probe Is
Looming After Escape
JOLIET, IIL, May 9 (/P)—The Jo-‘
liet Herald-News says that: “A talel
of gross mismanagement and serious
lack of discipline at the Stateville
penitentiary’ will be pileced togethe
by the grand jury next week, when it
calls before it those intimately fa
millar with conditions at the prison.”
There ig real willingness to se2 the
lid blown off, the paper says, quoting
“an authortative source,” and ‘de
clares taat “much of the information
to be given the grand jury will cen
ter about stripping of real authority
from Warden Whitman and giving it
to Peter N. Klein, deputy warden
slain in the escape list Wednesday.”
Klein was appointed contrary to
the advise of Whitman and the lat
ter was never consulted regarding
pardons and paroles, the paper says.
California is the ounly state in the
Union without an avenue which
bears its name in the District of Co
lumbia. The other 47 states and ev
en the territory of Alaska, have ave
rues named for them, though some
of the avenues are not yet develop
ed.
