WASHINGTON, May 10.~()~—Al
bany, Ga., today formally received the
grand prize for fire prevegtion pro
press in 1926 at the Chamber of Com
merce of the United States,
The award was presented J. A,
Davis, business manager of the Al
banyHerald, by Governor Walker, of
Georgia.
In accepting the award, which is
made every year, Mr, Davis said his
city had lost only $27,000 through
fires last year, and that despite its
growth, eight fewer fire calls were
made than during 1916. Albany has

Charged To Haeche
WILLIAMS, Cal, May 10 (#)—
John “Fred” Haeche today was
charged with murder in connection
with the death of Mrs. William Dun
can in a shotgun duel here yesterday.
Haeche, suffering from a severe
stomach wound, is held in Jail at
Colusa, near here. J

sugar stolen~by~Nathan ¥. . Leopold,
Jr., may have been reupox}-lble for
the murder of a. deputy warden of
the /penitentigry here and the subse
quent escape of seven desperate con
victe, B I
i A grand jury conducting an, investi
gation into the delivery was preésent
ed with evidence which tended to
show that Leopold, who with Richard
}Loeb murdered little Bobby Franks
“for a thrill,” may have been either
}the master mind or an accessory of
the escape plot.
} Leopold, who is beginning the sec
ond year of his life sentence, had
stolen a lump of sugar in the prison
mess hall. For punishment, he was
placed in solitary confinement near
the office of the deputy warden, his
hands shackled for four days to an
iron bar above his head.

movements of Deputy Warden Peter
Klein and supplied the plotters with
informatino which allowed them to
murder of the unsuspecting official.
" Laéopold, however, is reported to
have denied any part in the escape, de

Reduction of the rate on tramsient
second class mall matter-newspapers
mailed by individnals to one cent.
Establishment of a rate of not more |

Swift, former member of the local po
lice department, was sentenced ti
serve two years in the federal penr
tentiary and pay a fine of $2,000 i
federal court here today by Federa.
Judge W. H. Barrett, of Agusta.
Swift was tried last week and fou
guilty on six of 12 counts charging
violation of the national prohibition
laws, .
Judge .Barrett lectured Swift
briefly before passing sentence, tell
ing him that he was going to try and
break up whisky selling here. Swift
promised that the court would not be
