jail yesterday on a charge of arson
On the night of February 27 tae
barn of Mrs. Tatum, a resident of
Blue Creek district, was destroyed
by fire. It wa son the property oc~u
pied by Y. 1. Mayfield, a bailifi of
the district, who a few days previcus
ly accompanied county officers in
raiding a moonshine still in Blue
Creek district.
The cause of the fire was believed
at the time to be incendiary, and
Sheriff Jackson has labored inces
santly to apprehend the guilty
parties.

Cummings in yesterday’s senatorial
primary on a platform including
farm relief as the principal plank.
He accepts the voters mandate on
the iscue, he announced today, and
will leave for Washington probably
tonight in an efiort to obtain furmi
legislation that will take care of the
farm problem. not a makeshift” he
added that he will work with the corn
belt committee in an effort to bring
the differering faction of the senate
and house together on an agricultu
ral bill.

SOUTHERN BELL NAME JULY
FIRST.
The Cumberland Telephone Com
pany will be incorporated into the
Southern Bell Company on July 1,
under the name Southern Bell Tele
phone and Telegraph Company, the
plan having been approved Monday
by the stockholders of the Cumber
land Company.
There will be no change in officia!
personnel, and the state organiza??
‘tions and personnel will continue as
before. The two companies have had
the same general executives and of
ficials, and have been operated as
one group of the Bell System for
a number of years. It is expects that
the elimination of duplicate records
and duplicated efforts will result in
important economies.
The Southern Bell Telephone and
Telegraph Company will operate in
the nine states of Alabama, Florida,
Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mis--
sissippi, North Carolina, South Caro
lina and Tennessee, forming one of
the large companies of the Bell sys
tem. In magnitude it wiil properly
represent the great and growing
south when compared with telephone
companies in other sections.

most 1,500 pounds of food had becn
caried from Albatross camp to Ba
tavia camp,
The food was carried in two tripe
within one day while normally it
would have taken three native canocs
four days to transport it. It is plan.
ned to move more than ten tons
of supplies. :
Professor Stirling, on whose sug
gestion the leadership of the cxpedi
tion was turned over to Dr. Van
Leufen, is now at one of the native
villages making extensive investigu
tions. He is being assisted by Dr

and six hundreq and ninety-four for
Edwards and six hundred and twenty
seven for llerbert G. Aarons, repub
lican.
Two vears ago Clark contested the
seat of Representative .\hmrq who re
ceived five thousand five hundred and
gseventy-nine votes to one hundred
and ninety-six for Clark. The con
testant charged the election was ille
gal, false and fraudalent because of
“the existence of a political oligarchy
and general conspiracy throughout
the district.”

clubs are operated by criminals and
for this reason all honest people
should leave such places by two
o'clock in the morning to avoid be
ing victimiczd, Police Commissioner
McLaughlin asserted today in telling
why the curfew was put into eficet
in the bright light district.
He said “we know what has been
goin gon during certain hours ir
the night clubs and for this resson
we decided that two o’clock was the
hour for all decent people to be,out
of such places. We have reegived
numerous complaints about fiighl’
clubs and cakarets that have been
running open until dawn.”
