Fire today destroyed the sawmill
plant and .over 1,000,2000 fcet of
lumber of the Southern Timber &
Lumber Company, also the sawmill
plant and a bigz lot of lumber of D
E. Duggan, nggrcmfiing a probablc
ioss of around $75,0000. Some in--
surance was carried on both plants
Both firms were among the largest
timber operators in this section,

FARMERS IN ALABAMA
TO RAISE CHERRIES
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 14.—Af
ter having made a success in the cul
tivation of onions, tomatoes and
sirawberries, ' farmers =in Marshall
county have placed orders for 5,000
cherry trees and expected to order
5,000 moéra during the next planting
raason, enough to plant about 100
acres. 'That region alrcady has one
of, the largest cherry orchards in Ala
hama ‘and it has furnished ample
proof "that the fruit can be grown
there at a profit.
Strawberry grewers produced and
sold about $20,000 worth of berries
during the season just closed and
these same farmers are now preparing
to shop several carloads of Bermuda
ouions,

of the 149th anniversary of the adop
tion of tho Old Glory as the flag of
the United States on June 14, 1777,
hegan hore today and will continie
throughout temorrow.
This afternoon the Song of the
American Revolution, aided hy the
army and navy, decorated the Statue
of Liberty on Bedloe's island, A huge
flag, 100 teet long by 656 feet wide,
was draped from the gigantic symbol
of American freedom and at the base
of the statue a seven-foot wreath was
placed. Tomorrow will be occupied
with -observance by various patriotic
societies,
To avoid breaches of flag etiquette
in the cxpected great display of the
national emblem, the army informa
tion servier today issued a circular
explaining |imper use of flag.
“There are only two ways to dis
play the American fla gproperly,” the
circular said. “One is to fly the flag
frcely unfurled from a staff. The
othier is to hang the flag flat, with the
full horizental or vertical length fall
ing evenly,”

fects of the prolonged drought ir
these sections, it was found by raid

section Sunday.

abandoned an account of the streanm
on which it was located having becen
dried up by the hot weather. The of
ficers found evidences that others
had been mecved, probably. to the
swamrs along larger streams or hid
den until rains fall more abaundant
ly.
During the past few monihs more
than 75 stills have ‘een destroyed
in these sections, and others located
in Muscogee, Marion, Chattahoochce
and Talhot, counties.

MIAMI, IMa., June 14.-— Subpoenas
today were issued by the Dade county
grand jmy for a full investigation in
connection with the action of the
coastguard boat No. 297 firing on nl
rum beat in the Miami river with
700 persons in the line of fire.
The incident aroused considerable
attentionhere, and Commander C. G.
Porcher, in charge of the coast guard
mnit with base at Fort Lauderdale,
announced by telephone that he had ‘
started a “full investigation” aside
from the action of the grand jurv ‘
C‘vast guardsmen aboard the patrol
boat were criticized strongly for thewr
premiscuous fiving by spectators along
the bank as the patrol boat proceeded
toward the bay after its unsuccessful
chase. |
More than two dozen shots were
fireq by coast guardsmen as the
liquor running craft took advantage of
the approaching darkness to slip into
the river. Coast guardsmen started
firing, their siots passing within a
few yards of a string of fashionable
wpartment houses where several hun-
