ENGLAND FACES
UNWELCOME TASK
LONDON, June 23—(AP)—England
again is faceq with the unwelcome
task of hanging a woman for murder
and the country is much distressed.
The condemned woman is Mrs.
Louise Calvert, 33 vears old, and the
mother of three children, the young
cst being a baby boy. She is con
demned to he hanged tomorrow morn
ing at the Strangeway jail in Man
chester, for killing her landlady, Mrs,
Lily Wateriouse, a .wi(l()w with whom
she lived after heing separated from
her hushand. Robbery was suggest
ed as the motive for the crime during
the trial.

gson-Hicks, after a careful examina
tion of the case and censideration of
a petiticn for mercy signed hy many
thousands, has refusad a reprieve.
Rumorsg that Mrs. Calvert was about
to become a mother were investigated
and weie stated to be uanfounded by
the home secretary.
The prisoner’s baby hoy was taken
to Strangeway on Monday to see his
mother for the last time. Mrs. 'Cal
vert’s hushband, who initiated the pe
tition for ‘her rveprieve, also visited
‘]mr. He saidthat she maintained, as
always, that she did not commit the
‘murder,
Mrs. Calvert is the first woman
faced with execution in England since
Mrs. Edith Thompson was hanged in
Holloway jail on January 9, 193,
Mrs. Thompson was convicteq with

discussion in England and a huge
crowd gathered outside the prison
wall on the day that she was excent
ed. Thousands of persons signed a
petition fo rher reprieve without avail,
