‘ TO THE MIND
You curious thing men call the mind,
For their advanlages designed, ‘
What wilful tricks you play!
Somctimes obedient to man’s whim
You lend your graces fair to him
And save him from dismay,
But other times you leave him flat,
With nothing underncath his hat. ‘
Contrary as a woman f:_\ir,
By you no living man can swear,
You keep no law or rule.
One day you'll he to his delight
Unucuaily beean and lright, |
The next youw'll play the fool. ‘
Wlhen mest he nceds you, you'll be
iray.
And lead his feet and tongue astray
You govern zll my simplest acc,
You are the stcrehouse of my facts
You make or mar my fame;
You chould have everything in place
For every man and woman’s face '
Ycu should supply a name, |
Yet at the time T need you most
You leave me dumb as any post. ‘
1 i J
Oh, mind of mine, my only friend, \
My all on which I must depend,
Why must vou play such tricks?
* What pleagure to you can it be
So often to embarrass me
And all my records mix?
Now blush my cheeks with crimson
shame,
Because you've lost my neighbor’s
name,
