New York to Paris in 356 hours on a
trans-Atlantic non-stop flight of 3,100
‘miles with no special protection from
luhlpn at sea, is the aim of Captain
Rene Fonk, French flying ace, and
two American aviation officers, during
the first week In‘August) L
Decision to attempt the hop was
announceq here yesterddy after Cap
tain Fonk and Captéin Homer Barry,
American flier, conferred with Robert
Jackion, Concord banker, one of the
backers of the flight, Lieutenant A,
P. Snody, aide to Rear Admiral Wil
liam A. Moffett at Washington, will
make the trip as nnvl’gator. Fonk and
Barry will pilot the ship.
The plane to be used 18 now near
ing completion at the Sikorski plant
on Long Island. It is of the inclosed
type, with space for one man to sleep
in, and will carry special air tanks
designed to keep it afloat for several
days in case of a forced landing. It
will be put through severe tests, in
cluding .a 1,000-mile experimental
flight, betore the actual Paris attempt,
The plane will carry seven tons of

from Agneg Scott college, Decatur,

CHICAGO, July 6—(#)—Destitute
through failure of her divorced hus
band to pay the alimony decreed by
the court, her home utterly disrupt.l
ed and her five children taken from
her because she was unable to sup
port them, Mrs. Florence Newcomer
32, tried to end her life by swallow
ing a quantity of poison in front of a|
tolice station last night. She was
|rushed to a hospital where she may
recover. ‘
Six wegksago , she obtained a di
vorce from Lloyd Newcomer. The
court ordered him to contribute tc
the support of the five children, but:
according to the police, he went tc
Seattle where it is believed he is('étn
ployed in railroad work. The ecourt
gave him custody of the two older
children and he sent them to his sis
ter in Elgin, Mrs. Newcomer sought
vainly for work. Her rent fell due
and she was ejected. Then she sent
one child to a sister, in Peoria and
the others to her mother in Mount
Carroll. With her last dime she pur
chased poison and swallowed it.

AUBURN, Ala,, July 65.—(AP)— A
joint celebration of the formal open
ing of the new concrete highway be
tween Opelika and Auburn was held
at this place today.
Two thousand persons including
good road boosters from Georgia as
well as Alabama joined in the cele
bration., The opening of the highway
was preceded by a bigfiparade of deco
rated floats representing various civie
organizations and merchants. The
gpeakers included Dr. Sprl'ght Dowell,
president of the Alabama Polytech
nique institute; Mayor Cecil Yar
brough of Auburn; Mayor Dickinson,
of Opelika; Leiand Henderson, of the
Florida Short Route association, and
