Miss Jean Braswell, 17-year-old Try
on, N, C, girl, was shot.and instantly
killed and Q. C. Stomnmer, 25, of
Saluda, 'N. C., was critically wound
ed tonight' two miles from Saluda by
a boy named “Jimmy,” accordling- te
B. C. Sheehan, night chief of police
at Saluda.
Stonner, who is the son of a promi
nent Saluda merchant. told officers
after being shot, Chief Shaahan zaid
that he and Miss Braswell and “Jim
my” were riding together in an auto
mobile when he remarked that he
and the girl were to be married soon
Without any warning “Jimmy,” he
said, drew a pistol from his pocket
and rhot Miss Braswell in the sack
of the head and Stcnner in the
chest. He then fled.
Chief Sheehan said that Stonner
was unable to give the surname of
“Jimmy” but he told him the boy
lives in Tryon. The ho!icc have been
anable to find any boy named “Jim
my” answering the description who
resides at Tryon. A
Stonner was taken to a Tryon hos
rital where he was reported to be
in a dangerous condition. |
Miss Braswell was reported to have
moved to Tryon from Charlotte with
her mother a year ago.

WASHINGTON, July 9—(#)—The
government is without power to
make any regulations governing ra
dio in the absence of specific laws
from congress, Sccretary Hoover was
advised today by the department of
justice. ;
Pending a complete study of the
opinion, which was received at the
commerce department late in the
day, but was not made public, See
retary Hoover and radio officiais of
the department withheld comment. I
It was known however, that ume
commerce department was planning
to issue a comprehensive statement
based on the conclusion reached by
the attorney general.

GREENWOOD, Miss.,, July 9—An
unidentified negro, ~ charged with
having shot dnd severely wounded
Frank Smith, a deputy sheriff, was
held today in the county jail ,at
Clarksdale where he was taken over
night following a demonstration
during which he was seized by ni
crowd of men, but recovered by E
H. Crippen. sheriff of Leflore coun-i
ty. |
The negro shot Smith after thc‘
deputy had arrested him for quv:ati(m‘
ing on the highway near (h'v(-nw«m('l
and was bringing him to (ircl'nwoml‘
in an automobile. He was captured
later by a policeman, but was scized
by a crowd of men who had gather
ed. The sheriff arrived wtihin a dew
minutes, however, and induced, tho]
men to surrender him. Rumors that
a mob was forming later resulted in
his hurried removal to Clarksdale.
Smith was reported today in a
critical condition and his recovery
was regarded as doubtful. Announce
ment was made this afternoon that a
gpecial term of court would be called
to try the negro. -
