JUDGE BLAMES HIS BROTHMR
RUSSELL FOR ACTUAL KILL.
ING OF JOSEPH MAURER
CHIZAGO, July 14. (A)—Con
gideration of Robert B, Scott’s plee
of guilty and the expressed belief
that he was without the instinet to
wurder and was dominated by his
clder brother, Pussell T. Scott, led
Judge William N. Gemmill to sen
tence him to life imprisonment. ‘
Russell Scott is under sentence to
be hanged Octoser 15, next, for th«.-:
wnurder of Joseph Maurer, drug
clerk, shot to death when the S('ntt:
brothers robbed the City Hall I’har-i
macy in downtown Chicago the night

The actual slaying of young Maur \
er was characterized by Judge Gem-}
mill as “the mest cowardly and
cruel murder gince I have been or‘
the bench.” !
Judge Gemnill said he gathered
from the evidence that Russell Scott:
crept up behind Maurer and fired
the fatal shot with his pistol six inch
es away from the youth’s body.
The judge .severly criticised “or-'
ganizations formed to protect Rus-!
sell Scot from his punishment.” ‘
Russell Scott twice has escaped
the death penatly. In the same courti
room in which Robert was sentenced
today, Russell a year ago pleaded
guilty and was sentenced to death
l'g"b"ottorney obtained permission to
change his plea and a jury trial rc-‘(
sulted in another death sentence.
That was evaded when another jury‘
found Rusell insane. After incur-j
ceration in the: state prison for the
criminal insane, Russell recently was
rought back and another jury
found him sane. It was then he
was sentenced ic be hanged 0ct.15.
COMPOSER OF “DIXIE”
LIKED ’POSSUM MEAT
; By'Anoclated Press
MT. VERNON, O.—There are per
n(;ns here who remember the last days
of Daniel Decatur Emmett, the fa
mous composer of “Dixie,” who s
buried in Mountview cemetery near
Mt. Vernon.
Emmett was eighty-nine years old
when he died. He was born here in
1815 and died in his cabin, not far
from his birthplace. ! |
“I spent many an hour in Emmett's
cabin,” said J. W. McConkie, “How
he could sing, and play the violin, He
would sing by the hour, in his old
age, if a fat, sleek possum were prom
ised him at the end. He was pus-f
sionately fond of the meat of thm}
animal.” |
Emmett received inspiration for the
swinging lilt of Dixie while watching
a group of negroes load cotton on the
wharf at Memphis, according to Mc-
Conkie,
“They were humming,” saig Me-
Conkie, “just keeping time as they
juggled the bales, and something in
their attitude and song gave Emmett
the inspiration for his immortal tune.”
' Smmett always returned to Mt,
Vernon, after a tour of his minstrel
troupe. Once, at the height of his
glory, he came back from FEFuagland
