* THE ROSU
What makes the rose ¢a fair to see?
And why do peorp'e love its bloom?
In joy supreme and sorrow’s gloom
Why is it that the rose should be
The blossom chosen to exXpreps
Both tears of gricf and happiness?
I watch my lovely roses grow,
Not for themselves alone they toil,
They do not ask the richest soil
Nor merely live for pomap and show.
They give their beauty day by day
To all who chance to come their way
Th' blossoms which I cut appearg ;
Delighted that it pleascs me, ;
Upon the mothez plant I see ‘
No hin of anzer or of tears |
Because]'ve cut her tenderest bloom
To beautéy my 'ady’s Icom.
. 4
So rhould te soui of man rejoice
That it can sexc anotker’s need,
And give the beyqy lite may heed
Can speak with swrow's tender voice
Or chare his joy Wth cqual grace
And rise above thecoramonplace.
