WASHINGTON, August 9—(P)—
Poduction of fiftcen million six
hundred and twenty omne thousand
bales of cotton this year was indi
cated by the condition of the crop
August first, which was (9.8 per
cent normal as compared with a fore
cast of {ilteen million three hundred
and sixty-cight thousand bales and a
condition of seventy and seven
tenths July sixteenth this year and
last year’s crop of sixteen million
one hundred and three thousand six
hundred and seventy nine bales and a
condilion of sixty-five and six tenths
August first, the department of ag
riculture today anncunced.

Improvement in prospects occurred
chiefly during the last week of July
and was due largely to the fact that
the number of leaf Iloppcrs decreased
and cotton began squaring and
blooming more freely, the crop re
porting board announced
“At this time the crop is in a
critical stage,” the board said. “and
fruiting will be materially alfected
by the weather conditions during the
next month to six weeks.” |

bacco sales in Georgia the first
week of "August totaled seven mil
lion four hundred and sixty-three
Mundred and six pounds at an av
crage price of 24.33 cents as com
pared to two million nine hndred
and fifty-nine thousand three hun
dred and seventy-six pounds in nine
teen twenty five with an average
price of 15.93 cents a pound, as re
vealed in a report issued today, by
the Georgia cooperative crop report
ing service. :

der at Louisville, Ga., on Thursday

in Louisville, where the husiness ses
sions will be held and where the as
sociation members will be enter
tained extensively. Saturduy after
noon they will go to Wayneshoro
as banquet guests of that city and
Saturday night, September, .the 26,
they will go to Augusta for further
social activities, The association will
will remain in Augusta over Sunday.
The big climax of the autumn
meeting will be the stay of the
Georgia editors at the Kenilworth|
Inn, Asheville, N. C. Numerous cn-|

lives appear to have been the toll of
the “mystery wave” which swent
Brant and Farnham beaches yester
day. Seven bodies have heen recov
ered, five others are missing and a
score of bathers were swept from

result of an explosion which wrecked
the plant of the Bristol Fire Works
Company at Bristol today.
Explosion shook the entire town
and shattered windows in structures
within a mile radius. Two houses

Due to a lack of train service the
Cordele troops, Copany Lof the
121st infantry which broke camp at
Tybeo Saturday, were forced to
spend the night in Helena in a pas
genger car into which they had been
packed on their journey out of Su
vannah, and they arrived in Cordele
Sunday morning on the humpty
dumpty Helena-Americus much hot
ter about it than the day's ountins
temperature should justify.
The annual trip to Tybee this year
was full of hard luck for the men
almost to the very hour of hitting
foot back on home soil. The storm
pul them all in the water and mud
and they got orders to ove up to
Sereven after they had to take hoats
and paddle out. The rest ol their two
weeks they had to spend in finding
the “leavings” of their camp belong
ings and ','t‘llin;v. them back together
in presentable shape.

no worse shape for their experience
and they are at proesent glad there
