HARPOON REACHES WHALES
- BUT THEY ESCAPE IN SFA
SEABRIGHT, N, J.. August 16—
With no apparent concern for the
summer colonigts who crowded the
north shore to watch their antics,
three large whales, cach mceasaring
about 40 feet, sported within a half
mile of the surfl here today and
lingered long enough for local fis -
ermen to get within harpooning dis
tance. One of the harpoons reached
its mark, but the whale eseaped.
The bulky visitor first was no
ticed ctout & mile off shore., They
were following the large schools
of “bunkers” thut have been work
ing along the heach this wecek, en
deavoring to satisfy their appetiite..
Word of their vre-ence were relaved
to the nearby fishing villages anl

Captain Borden White, in bis power

Andrew Peterson, of the Sca Sarpint,
mede a wide cirele and succeeded in
driving home a deuble harpr i
As Captain White prepared (o lct
