{‘SHOW-OFF *TO STRUT OH
fi THE CIRCLE SCREEN
~ Jurt how foolish and funny, pa--
thetic and pestiferous, the average
American show-of{ actually appears
in real life will be revealed for the
first time next Tuesday when Para
“mount’s human and humorous come
dian, “The Show-off” begins it lo
cal engagement at the Circle.
In its original form this picture
play was a popular ztage success by
George Kelly, but Malcolm St. Clair,
the director, with the help of Pierre
Collings, the scenarist, has incorpo
rated comedy sequences and bits of
“husiness’” that were out of the
question in the spoken version be
cause of the limitations of the stage.
“The Show-Off” gets its = name
from the central character in the
story—a flashy and conceited indi
vidual, who drives everybody wild
with hig boasting and lying. To hear
him talk, one gets the impression
that he practically owns the Penn
¢ylvania Railroad, whereas in reality
he ig nothing but a small-salaried
cierk.
His rompous bluffing stands him
in good stead when it comes to love,
for he succeeds in marrying a charm
ing girl, despite the open opposition
of her family, who recognizes him
for just what he is. As a husband, he
is a poor provider, and as a son-in
law, a burden and a trouble-maker.
‘Tiy/ blaster and lies almost .get him
“into jail and nearly bankrupt the
Jamily, but by a last-minute finan-‘
¢inl coup, he saves the day and jus-|
tifies himself and'his ‘egdtism.
lln the matter of cast, ‘even the
most' captious eritie 'will / readily
admit that Director St. Clair is a
mizhty, fine picker. Ford Sterling,
J;;flls Wfl;ofl,"’ Tboui,;;c .. 'Brooks and
CGregory Kelly carry the featured
roles, wheih insures acting of a de
cidedly high order.
