A MOCKINGBIRD'S FAREWELL
1 love my friend, the Mockingbird,
Today his song again I heard—
His matchless melody, |
Again he made me think of June—
His tender song, his merry tune,
Oné note scemed sad to me . |
It med. not with the other tones
An%mehow dimmed the joyous“
ones,
A sad note soft and low;
I wondered why, and then it seem
“ed 3 |
My friend of coming winter dreamed’
Ani} that he soon must go— |
Fly to some strange land far a\'l'vay,
To heedless ears sing his sweet lay,
And build another nest,
But lose the home he lived in long,
To charm dear friends who loved his
- song.
"Twas this that irked his breast.
O sweetest singer of the air!
Goto a sunny ¢lime more fair,
Atfi'{; rapturously sing;
Néf';"long will dreary' winter 'last
Cofii winds and storms will soon be
- past—
Come tack when calls the spring!
You will be free from storm and
“rain,
And with us be, and long remain,
Sing no notes that sound so sad.
You heal all hearts with heavenly
song,
In wakeful nights and all day Tong,
Make you not sad hearts glad?
