CHEAP POWER—AND
THIS SECTION
lany an ambitious little busincss
ter in the territory around Cor
-3 has been whipped by Stone &
hster's hired agents in this terri
y~—mostly lawyers who get a little
up on the ag{m‘n for. thié job—into
iltelal frenzy of excitement over
power supply for industrial uses.
ey are tolq that .unlen"—rt,har have
y Stone & Webster lines they can
z' have cheap power at all
All this is false— false in every
aath of it. “Our'nelgboting compnus
Ades may not understand. They will
ink that Cordele will want to hold
em down and rise triumphantly
er them when its abundance of
iter power is ready. Doubtless they
ab being told just such a thing at
fs moment. We know that Stone
~ Webster are using some sort of
ison that works a little community
to a quick frenzy.
(ordele and Crisp county will be
J‘fy \vll.h. their own power supply
15 when they get it, these little
i’pmuaiiés; now selllng their heart
afl suill to Stone & Webster will
afve a million regrets. They nevel
hould separite themselves from their
gwer plants and distribution sys.
oms, If they do, they will become
i?}nlegs victims of the most con
ctencclcss crowd of power robbers
n all the south. We know thesc peo-
W¢—know their policies. There isn't
I§Tllttle community in south Georgia
daay selling out to them that isn't
;oing to its absolute and permanent
suin, so far as cheap power is con
cerned.
This same little community—Cor
dele—was sold out to them 20 years
ago. Since that moment there hasn't
been a chance to enjoy any cheap
power in any form. There isn't any
now—and there were years that mosi
of Flint river’s cheap power went
over the dam at Albany where the
power opgr_ators preferred that it
should go yather tham to sell it to
ué at a price we*could pay and thrive,
“Cordele has never had a greater
handicap than the high cost of pow
ex:_ It mever will have a greater one.
I_t‘.n:nugh money has been gobbled. up
out of little exverimental; industries
in -’ Cordele in that I\\'ol\(‘}' years to
pay for the whole town-— business
houses ang all. Today—at this very
moment—there isn't a busniess con
cern in this town that isn't paying
Stone & Webster net ten percent on
@ll its investment as an excess—as
an excess — mind you - in power
charges. That's Cordele's exverience
since it got into the hands of the
same people who are running about
buying in the other little ambitions
centers in south Georgia.
Talk about good business judgment
—any corporation that has a business
policy this hog-snouted combine ex
udeg into the atmosphere whereve:
it sets its foot—ought not to be al
lowed any sort of room to operate.
This same crown runs Savannah —
has been running Savaunnah for more
than twenty years. Ask any good
ecitizen of that community if he votes
—if hig votes count for anything in
iin election. Take for example the
fate which the Crisp power amend
ment met at the hands of this same
putlaw business corporation in Chat-
Pam. Alex Lawrence is the pald le
gfil advisor for Stone & Webster in
Savannah. Alex Lawrence runs Chat
ham politics—directs flhe /vote the
way he desires—and that is the way
jit goes.
Th/at is the sort of policy that will
bhe manifested by these same peonle
in every ambitious little community
where they go ang buy the power
plant and pay the public debts and
then—sit down with a noose—a pub
lic noose—around the necks of the
users and collect back what they
pay—collect back in coin of the realm
many times over.
l Our friends may ask why we are
concerned. That isn’t hard to an
swer. Crisp county, to be sure, will
have its abundant power. We are
determined on that, But when we
zet it, the same little towns around
ng that have so hurried to sell them-i
selves out to the Stone & Webster
crowd, will have to watch us enjoy}
the use of abundant cheap power and
will have to live under a terrific
handicap imposed by these same pow
er interests. They think it a good
thing now to sell out to them and get
rid of their public debts. They nev
er had a public debt like that they
will have to pay Stone & Webster.
The other public debts they could
shift around to sHit _it_hemselves.‘l
Stone & Webster will be their politi-’
cal masters because the money mag- |
’t,er is a powerfyl boss and le can di-,i
rect the affairs of any ('ommunit:y‘
that sells itself. Stone & Webstgr,’
run Savannah. They wil} run all"
the others that belong to them. !
~ln the inpaniimé tlfé"Criqp county |
power supply will be here for us to!
offer as a keen and appealing indnce-"
ment. It will be an advantage n()}
neighboring community can have that!
already has solg out to Stone &/
Webster. The Crisp power supply is%
going to be a large and a cheap pow-|
er supply. There isn't any doubt |
about that. We think it is going to'
sell — sell the moment we have it?
ready—indeed bhefore it is ready. l
And we have thiz passing waruing’
to all our neighbors. The modern:
deisel engine and a publicl.\'-ownedll
distribution is forty times better for!
any community than Stone & Web- ;\‘
«ter. They will bring no such thing\
1s the fabled cheap power. It will!
be the highest priced power any com-]
munity ever paiq for—that's been our :
experience. Stone & Webster prefer
to send it to waste over the dam t,n;
a wiser program of selling at a pricej
the public can pay. i\
This community has suffered 1011;;';
enough. The people of Crisp couutyi
want to grow. They are m'ovi(ling‘
their own power supply and it will,‘
be well just here to say to our neigh.!
hors that we have a common imeresl,;
in the future of this section. Stone
& Webster are the monster in this
section which the industrial world‘
shuns. This same group operates out |
of Boston, Mass. They are known
by big business from 'one end of this
country to the other. There isn't xml
industry in America that is coming‘
to sit downy and make itself depond-_‘;
ent for one moment en that corpom-,l
tion for a power supply. No person,'
no business concern, ever became de-‘
pendent upon thig corporation for aI
pm{tr supply that did not pay a'
higher prace for it than those charged
by any other concern supplying pmv-l
er in Georgia. That's Stone & \\'vh-l
ster's notorious business record in the
industrial world. ¥ 1A
It is a handicap to belong to Stone
& Webster—a very great industrial
handicap. Here in Crisp county we
are getting from under. We are go-.
ing after our own supply. We have|
that crowd to fight. We know we!
are not going through it so easily.i
The same crowd that warned against
Dothan in this territory when we
were voting our power supply—how

They like to think themselves beau-"

The vanity of man differs much}
from that of the woman, says Dr.
Aveling. Men, as a rule, do 15t pow- |
der their noses or deftly wield thei
lipstick: they ecarry no mirrors in
dainty vanit& bags or scraps if filmy
lace instead of manageable handker
‘chiefs. In the main, their satisfaction
in themselves is of a sterner quality
—often of the body, but more of
ten of the mind,
They encourage the 'beljef that‘
they are mentally strong—that they
are ‘giants of intellect. Men are vain
of theirreal or fancied achievements,
physical prowess or mental super
fority; and their vanity generally in-i
creases with their ‘age; whereas '
women's generally does not. A vainl
young thing be charming, a vain old‘
woman is a rarity, fortunately, for;
she would be arpalling. ' ’
But we are told we have a lot ofg
vain old men. It is the male peacock%

" far. We are advised the I‘nale variety
'of vanity—having a good opinion of
'one's self—if a man lives up to it

LEOPOLD CITES PRISON
. ETHICS WON'T TESTIFY
JOILET, lil., November 23—(&)—
Nathan F. Leopold, Jr., who, three
years ago disregarded the laws and
regulations of society when he, with
Richard Loeb, ruthlessly slew young
Bobby Franks, took refuge in the re
gard for “thics” of the state peniten
tiary today and refused to testify in
thelslaying of Deputy Warden Peter
Klein during an escape.
“Im afraid' I will have td be’ ex
cused from angwering, as I am~an
inmate of the institution,‘and it'is
against the ethics of the institution
'to testify,” Leopold replied to: &
question of the dcfense' attorney.
“I do not wish to be in contempt
of court, bt it is against the ethics
and I'm going to be there a long
time."
State’s Attorney Rehn, upon‘
crross-eamination, merely asked
whether Leopold knew of the occur-‘
rences in the solitary cellhouse
where Klein was slain.
“I am giving you mywor d of hon
or I did not,"' Leopold answered.
