HAROLD LLOYD IN ‘THE l
FRESHMAN’ AT CAPITOL!
It has become sucih a habit forl
‘Harold Lloyd to make comedies of |
of a high grade of excellence that it’
','s'eems corhnlonlplace and savoring of |
“i‘epetifion to say that “The Fresh-i
;man,” at the Capitol Thursday, isg
‘another link in his unbroken chaini
'of hits. In fact, in our humble opin-}
ion, it is the best of all of them and
that statement is made after care-!
‘fu] reflection. '!
“While not as breath taking as|
“Safety Last,” as filled with hi-|
larious farce as “Why Worry?” or
as crammed with gags as “Ho'ci
.Water” it is nevertheless better en-.
tertainment than any of these for it
combines the best laugh-getting
“points of them all. In type it more
nearly resembles “Girl Shy” for the
‘\laughs have been hung on a farce
‘comedy framework in which there
{\is just enough story to carry them,
strong human interest and a plenti
| ful sprinkling of pathos.
! As socn as the characters and
i the atmosphere are well planted, the
. laughs start in—at first gently, and
| then working up with increased vol
! ume and velocity, until your laughs
!‘have become one proilong'cd roar. We
!see Harold. in his home, just prior
I to leaving for college, planning his
|
?\campaign to be the most popular boy
i on the campus. Then come enough
! scenees on the train to introdce him

THE CORDELE DISPATCH
to the heroine, Jobyna Ralston. His
arrival and welcome exceeds his
fondest dreams. for he doesn’t rea
lize, in his simplicity, that he’s been‘
recognized as a dub and is beingl
kidded to a fare-ye-well. There isJ
excellent humor and human interest.
in the scene where he makes a‘
speech to the students while he has
a kitchen fidgeting under his
sweater.
The laugh becomes more robust |
‘and the action more strenuous whenl
substitute to at least save the school
tackle practice with the football]
‘squad. In this sequence a tear or}
‘two is mixed for an extra measure
lof emotional reaction. This se-l
‘quence is followed by the Fall Frolic
\of which Harold Lloyd is host and
\‘which he is forced to attend in a
basted tuxedo that causes a solid
quarter of an hour of hilarity
: The great climax comes in the
football game, into which Harold, on
‘, ly a lowly water boy is thrown as a
shstitute to at least save the school
{rom disgrace of forfeiting the game.
‘,lThat football scrimmage simply
| can’t be described, and we wouldn’t
do it if we could for it is far too
': much to see it. It makes you want to
: stand up and cheer for good old
Tate and that lucky boob, Harold
' Lamb. And when “The End” flashes
' on the screen the marvel is that your
eyes are a little moist.
.
f‘ It's a great picture of laughs and
thrills and tears, extremely well con
: structed, smoothly directed, and per
| fectly acted by a cast that couldn’t
il have been more widely selected.

THE kidneysare the blood filters.
If they fail to function properly
there is apt to be a retention of toxic

feeling and, sometimes, toxic back
aches, headaches, and dizziness are
symptoms of this condition. Further
evidence of improper kidney func
tion is often found in burning or
scanty passage of secretions. Each
year more and more people are learn
ing the value of Doan’s Pills, a

Scarcely a nook or hamlet anywhere
but has many enthusiastic users.
