GRETA GARBO IS

~ LEAD I N NEW
| AN
' FAMOUS SWEDISH STAR IS
} CHOSEN TO PLAY VAMP IN
. “THE TEMPTRESS”
1 —
i Greta Garbo, regarded as one of
the foremost screen’ actresses of
Europe, ‘plays the leading role in
~ “The: Temptress,” Metro-Goldyn?
\. Mayer’s picturizatioh of Vicente
\ Blasco Ibanez novel coming to the
. Capitol Theatre Thursday. Although
her career has extended over a pe
‘riod of but two years, Miss Garbo
“achieved ' unusual distinction in
Swedish films. She' is a typical Scan
dinavian type, a' blonde, stausque,
and possessed of the nobility of man
ner so characteristic of her race.
Miss Garbo brings an American pic
‘ ture a vivid personglity, a fine dra
matic instinct, and rare physica'l
charm. : |
While a pupil of the Royal Acade
my of Dramatic Art in Stockholm,i
she was “discovered” by Mauritz
Stiller, foremost Scandinavian film
directcr, who was looking for a type
to fill the leading role in his big pro
‘duction, “The Atonement of Goesta
i Berling,” the screen version of Sel
‘'ma Lagerlof’s Nobel Prize story.
iShe was an instantaneous success
fand soon was prcclgimed the most
fpromising screen actress in all Eu
rope. B -
~ This was two years ago. Offers
from U-F-A and other Continental
companies followed immediately,
but Miss Garbo preferred to stay
'with Swenska Film Industrie, while
‘building up a strong foundation in
the art of screen acting.. This com
pany has been one of the foremost
producing ' organizations in Europe
and has developed many great stars.
Then came a real _ opportunity,
Louis B. Mayer, the producing ge
nius of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Company ‘met her while on a visit to
Berlin, saw “The Atonement of
Goesta Berling” and persuaded the
fair star to come to America. Her
first production for Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer was the leading rcle in Ibanez
“The Torrent,” and her success was
so great that she was. immediately
givén the lead in “The Temptress”
Supporting Miss Garbo in this pro
duction are Antonio Moreno, Lionel
‘Barrymore and Roy D’Archy.
