MT. VERNON, Ge., November 14—
(AP)—Three men are under arrest |
charged with murder following the
killing of Flournoy Gibbs, 25( here
yesterday aftrenoon at the county jail.
The three men are J. Y Nordeck, L.
N. Thompson and T. H. Wright
Gibbs was killed by members oi a
possé which had been sworn in by
Sheriff Mcßae and who had been in
seareh of Gibms. The warrant charg
ing murder were sworn out by mem
bers of the dead man’s family. A hear
ing will be held shortly.
Gibbs went to the county jail yes
terday with the declared intention of
vecovering his automobile which, ac
cording to the Sheriff, had been tak
en near the scene of an alleged in
cendiary fire.
When he approached the jail ves
terday to recover his car, a poss
was waiting. Gibbs was armed. One
member of the posse in orderind

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14— (AP) —
William J. Burns and his son, W.
Sherman Burns, were given permission
today by government counsel to ap
pear before the grand jury investi
gating the Fall-Sinclair oil jury scan
dal which has led to serious charges
against him. .
Flat denial of the latest charges
against the Burns Detective Agency
were made by Sherman Burns, who
declared he would disprove “every
word” of the sensational statement of
William J. McMullen, Burns operator,
th accused the agency of fibricating
testimony to bring about a mistrial in
the Teapot Cace.

funeral services of Mr. C. P. McGugan
at the First Baptist church this af
ternoon at four o’clock. The services
were in charge of Rev. E. A. Price,
pastor of the Northern Heights Baptist
church, Rev. Carl Barth, pastor of
the Presbyterian church, and Rev. J.
B. Johnstone, pastor of the First
Methodist church.

Gibbs is reported to have ignored
the advice of bystanders and contin
ued his progress toward the jail
just as members of the pesse ar
rived on the scene. Members of
the posse ordered him to throw up
his hands and when he refused a
shot was fired into the.ground in an
attempt to intimidate him. At {this
juncture, Gibbs is said to have at
tempted to bring his gun into play
and, seeing his move, members of
the posse fired. Several shots
lodged in Gibbs’ head and he died
instantly.

(AP)—The story of a bootlegging
wventured that earned more than a

his wife, Imogene Holmes Remus,

man robbed him of his money, will
be enfolded during Remus’ first de
gree murder trial, beginning today.
As chief of his own defense coun

Dodge and of conspiring with Dodge
to keep him in prison so they could
steal his fortune.

' The tank containing five million
cubic feet of nitro gas let loose
with one of the most terrific blasts
in Pittsourgh’s history. Practically
every. building in the immediate
lvcinity was wrecked and windows
i over a wide area were shattered, im
cluding some in down town depart
ment stores and office structures.
When the tank burst a ball of
fire higher than the adjacent tip of
Mount Washington, shot into the
' air spreading out in a fan shape.
' Scores Trapped
| Firemen, policemen and volunteer

scores of persons in their homes and
factories of the region had been
trapped when the buildings col
'lapsed. Every hospital in the city

sole presidential car.didate remaining
as a result of a recent revolution, ex
pressed belief today that the attempt
to assasinate him yesterday was of
political nature.

Mrs. Mary Mayo, comely young wll_l

not been divulged. hoth of Seville,
(ia., near here, are being held in the
Lanier county jail at Lakeland, Ga.,
on “charges of murder in connection
with the death of the woman's hus
iband, which occurred about three
months ago and which was repofiegl
as suicide. Mrs. Mayo was arrested
at Seville last night by Sheriff O.
L. Smith of Wilcox county. The
man was placed in jail yesterday
morning. . : ‘:
According to the authorities. the
arrests resulted from statements 'to
the effect that her husband and-Mrs.’
Mayo shot James Mayo, hushand of
the accused woman, which the wité
of the unidentified man gave officerg
following a whipping alleged to
have bheen administered her by her
i husband. .
- Mrs. Mayo, according to local au
thorites, stated that her hushand
shot himself while shé was prepar
ing hreakfast one morning about
ivln-eu months ago. Neighbors are
'said to have hecome suspicious of
'the man's death by reason of the
stiffness of the body, which indicat
ed that Mayo had heen dead for mew
eral hours,
