Health board honors
longtime member
David L. Rainer has retired
from the Camden County
Board of Health after 39
years of service.
Rainer attended his last
meeting on Dec. 5, and was
presented a plaque by Cam
den County Health Depart
ment nurse manager Debbie
Melton.
Although Interim District
Health Director Dr. Diane
Weems could not attend the
meeting, she sent the follow
ing message: “On behalf of
the Coastal Health District
and the Camden County
Health Department, I would
like to extend a heartfelt
thank you for your numerous
years of service to the Cam
den County Board of Health.
I know that this appointment
required extensive time and
energy and a deep level of
commitment. We all appreci
ate your efforts to make your
tenure on the board a success
and want you to know that
your dedication to public
health has made Camden
County a better and health
ier place to live. I regret that
I am unable to be there today
to celebrate your years of
service and to thank you in
person, but please know that
I sincerely appreciate all that
you have done to serve the
community and staff through
your work on the board of
health. You will be missed
and I wish you all the best.”
Rainer, the former District
5 representative on the Cam
den County Board of Com
missioners, served on the
board of health as the county
commission’s representative.
Local boards of health are
made up of seven members
who are responsible for the
following:
• determining the health
needs and resources of its ju
risdiction by research and by
collection, analysis and eval
uation of all data pertaining
to the health of the commu
nity;
• developing, in coopera
tion with the department,
programs, activities and fa
cilities responsive to the
needs of its area;
• securing compliance
with the rules and regula
tions of the department that
have local application; and
• enforcing all laws per
taining to health unless the
responsibility for the en
forcement of such laws is
that of another county or
state agency.

Glasses serve as artist’s palette
When illness made it nec
essary for Paula Stoner to go
into semi-retirement, she
decided to give her creative
nature an opportunity to
blossom.
And blossom it has — all
over glasses of various types
and sizes and, occasionally,
other pieces of glassware.
Stoner has a military
background, but has always
enjoyed “thinking outside
the box.” She began using
polymer clay several months
ago after seeing a friend’s
work in California. The
friend was doing unusual
collages on glass to create
two-dimensional work, but
Stoner decided to try using
the clay on items that peo
ple can use daily — drinking
glasses.
Stoner is now decorating
various types of glasses,
most frequently wine
glasses, with flowers and ab
stracts. She said she enjoys
experimenting with con
trasting colors and mixing
colors to achieve shading.
Often using bright colors,
Stoner refers to her work as
“hand candy” or “eye
candy.” Daisies and sun
flowers are some of her fa
vorite subjects and she
recreates them in fine detail.
She says learning new tech
niques with relatively ex
pensive materials and
developing creativity is a big
challenge while keeping
prices in range with the
everyday market.
Stoner’s work will be dis
played at Olde Towne
Gallery in downtown St.
Marys during the month of
January. Her work, plus that
of many other local artists,
can be seen daily from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. at 304 Os
borne St., next to Cedar
Oak Cafe.
