with Valdosta State

What Camden County High
golfer Mitch Lomis sees at Val
dosta State University certainly
suits his eye.
“The campus is really nice and
the course they play on (Kinder-
lou) is really nice,” said Lomis,
who recently signed with the
Division II Blazers.
According to his recruiting
profile with the National Colle
giate Scouting Association,
Lomis has spent three seasons
with the Camden County High
varsity.
“I pretty much decided to play
in college when I started playing
in the eighth grade,” he said.
In 2012, he posted a 1.2 hand
icap, with an 18-hole scoring av
erage of 74 he shaved from 78 in
2011 and 82 in 2010. His nine-
hole average has also shrunk, to
a 38 in 2012 from 39 in 2011
and 41 in 2010, and his driving
accuracy and greens-in-regula-
tion stats have also improved.
Last season, Lomis tied for
medalist honors in late March at
the Packer Invitational in Moul
trie with a 2-under 70. He shot
76 at the Region 3-AAAAA
tournament at Osprey Cove in
April, and 80 in the state tour
nament in May in Augusta.
His fine play carried over into
the summer.
In June, at the prestigious
Georgia Junior Championship
in Albany, Lomis went 76-72-72
— the last two rounds even-par
— and placed in a tie for 12 th in
a field that included 144 of the
state’s top junior golfers. He also
captured the Brunswick Junior
Classic by six strokes — finish
ing as the only golfer under par
— and the Junior McGladrey
Classic in Sea Island by one shot.
Lomis won the men’s club
championship at Osprey Cove
in the fall and has also been jun
ior club champion at Laurel Is
land. Starting at the beginning
of the year, he’ll play some
American Junior Golf Associa
tion events.
Before going to VSU, Lomis
has another season left with
CCHS, and improving the short
game is a focus. To that end, he
has spent extra hours on the
practice green to cut more
strokes and to help the ’Cats in
the spring.
“We can be pretty solid and
win the region,” he said. “That’s
our goal.”

pointed 29 schools to capture the
USMC Seahawk Slam tourna
ment last weekend in Hilton
Head, S.C.
The Wildcats’ Niko Kolgaklis
ruled the 152-pound class, and
Chris Bartek (120), Jason Alfau
(145), A.J. Walthour (170) and
Alec Davis (220) were runner-ups
at their weights. CCHS — in a
field comprised mostly of South
Carolina schools — finished with
265 team points, well ahead of
runner-up Summerville (184.5),
ranked third in South Carolina.
For Camden, Nathen Pristavec
(132) and Dustin Ballard (160)
placed third; Devlin Ryan (113),
Alex Diaz (195) and Alex Wash
ington (285) fourth; Andrew Hol
comb (126) fifth; Aiden Silva
(106) and Elo Roberson (138)
sixth; and Alex Vincent (182) sev
enth.
Before taking down Player
Long of Bamberg-Ehrhardt, 3-2
in the final, Kolgaklis pinned Bat
tery Creek’s Malik Morgan in
1:34, blanked Union Grove’s Kai
Kizzie, 11-0 and pinned Nation
Ford’s Nick Raniszewski in 1:58.
Alfau advanced to the 145 final
with a pin of Union Grove’s Luke
Parker (2:40), and 11-5 and 15-4
decisions over West-Oak’s Bill
Sexton and Central Academy’s
Alex Ortiz. Kevin Thompson of
Eastside (Ga.) won the title
match, 5-4.
Bartek opened with a 1:45 pin
of West-Oak’s Bradley Moore,
then decisioned Charlton Clark of
Eastside (S.C.), 7-4, and North
Myrtle Beach’s Steven Joey Small,
4-1. Ethan Wampler of Rich

Raven Burden scored 19
points and had nine rebounds
and five steals as the Camden
County girls led from halftime
on in a 58-43 victory over visit
ing Charlton Saturday night.
“I just felt we didn’t play clean
basketball,” CCHS head coach
Keith Ellis said, but “the effort
is still there. We’re still chasing
and trapping.”
Burden’s free throw with a few
seconds left in the second quar
ter gave the Lady Wildcats (9-1)
a 28-27 lead at intermission, and
CCHS never let Charlton have
the edge back in the second half.
In a closely fought third quar
ter, Shantel Eason’s three-point
play put Camden up 37-33 mid
way through, but the Lady ’Cats
never pushed the lead to greater
than five in the period. Camden

Like most American men,
the only workouts I get on
New Year’s Day are trudging
an already-worn path from
the couch to the refrigerator
and my thumb doing a non

That’s why, at least for me,
going to games and being a

home watching is more
preferable. Finding a clean
bathroom at halftime or any
time is also a lot easier and
certainly less time-consum
