CMS students
earn nod for
determination
At Camden Middle
School character counts.
During the month of Janu
ary, teachers and students
will focus on the character
trait of determination.
It is described as “decid
ing it is worth it to finish
what one has started.” Stu
dents were selected by their
team of teachers for show
ing determination in aca
demics and/or social
endeavors.
Students being recog
nized receive a personal
note from their team of
teachers, the Cougar dog
tag and a PAWSome ticket
redeemable for a prize.
Both parents and students
of the Cougar of the Month
awards are invited to a spe
cial breakfast to honor the
students.
The Character Education
program is just one of the
initiatives to emphasize pos
itive behavior within the
school.

Team nabs top honor at
Jan. 5 robotics contest
The Mysterious Minds
Lego Robotics Team com
peted at the Super Regional
First Lego Robotics compe
tition on Jan. 5, in Warner
Robins.
The team competed
against 39 other teams in the
area for robot performance,
robot design, research and
gracious professionalism.
Each team was tasked
with researching a solution
for a problem that senior
citizens encounter, building
a robot to perform tasks
without human assistance
and working together as a
team.
This year, the Mysterious
Minds took first place in the
Innovative Solutions cate
gory of Research for the
Lightning Walker. The
team interviewed and re
searched problems that sen
iors encounter with walkers
and came up with the Light
ning Walker design from
that research.
Stargazing event is tonight
In partnership with the
City of Fernandina Beach
(Fla.) Department of Parks
and Recreation, Fort Clinch
State Park, the Northeast
Florida Astronomical Soci
ety, and ScienceFirst/Starlab,
Wild Amelia will host an
evening of stargazing at two
different locations on Friday,
Jan. 18.
The Starlab event will be
held indoors at the Atlantic
Recreation Center Audito
rium from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
with stargazing outdoors at
Fort Clinch State Park from
8 to 9:45 p.m., weather per
mitting. Both events are
open to the public and are
free; there will be no admis
sion charge to enter the fort
on the evening of Jan. 18.
Stargazers of all ages are in
vited to attend the first-ever
“Evening of Starz” on
Amelia Island.
The first event will show
case the “Starlab,” an inflat
able dome planetarium from
ScienceFirst. Starlab will be
inflated in the Atlantic
Recreation Center audito
rium and will be ready for
guests at 3:30 p.m. This
planetarium can accommo
date up to 25 children and
adults at one time; and 20-
minute presentations in the
Starlab will be offered.
There will also be a “side
show” of scientific/ecology
exhibits for those guests
waiting to enter Starlab. The
Starlab event will go on, re
gardless of weather.
From 8 until 9:45 p.m., the
second event will take place
on the parade grounds of
historic Fort Clinch, a spot
loved by stargazers because
of the relative absence of
commercial lighting and the
clear view of the heavens. As
tronomers from the North
east Florida Astronomical
Society (NEFAS) will have
large telescopes in the fort
for viewing. With the theme
of “The Biggest, the Bright
est and the Newest,” as
tronomer Link Cooper will
introduce the features guests
will be observing, including
the partial moon, Jupiter and
the constellation Orion. At
tendees should arrive at the
fort between 7:30 and 8 p.m.,
should dress for the weather
and should bring chairs and
insect spray.
In the event of rain or
cloud cover, Wild Amelia
will announce postponement
of the Fort Clinch event on
its Facebook page after 4
p.m., and the Fort Clinch of
fice or Steve Leimberg (904-
491-0474) may also be con
tacted for updates.
This unique opportunity
to see Starlab and to look at
the night sky in historic Fort
Clinch on the same evening
is a first for Amelia Island, al
though Wild Amelia and
NEFAS have offered
stargazing events previously.
For more information
about this and other pro
grams offered by Wild
Amelia, an all-volunteer
non-profit organization ded
icated to educating residents
and visitors about the
wildlife and wild places of
Amelia Island, visit
